InterPore News featuring Who’ll be in the next Time Capsule?

Sent on: 29-03-2026

Dear InterPore colleagues,

Curious about how a famous professor became famous? Suggest him/her for an InterPore Time Capsule interview (see item below). It is inspiring to listen to earlier editions. Very different origins, different paths to their fame, probably some coincidences or luck, but the commonality is the enthusiasm for their work.

More enthusiasm speaks from the IP2026 organization, both scientifically (e.g. courses) and socially (wine tasting). And with enthusiasm as a driving force, we go to activities such the KC lecturer, a chapter meeting (in China), scientific achievements and new jobs!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Spaces are still available for the Muscadet Wine Cellar Visit & Tasting on Monday, 18 May.

Join us for a relaxed excursion into the heart of the Muscadet wine region. Interested participants are invited to take part in a guided visit to a local wine cellar, including a Muscadet tasting, set against the beautiful vineyards south of Nantes. Participants will travel together by bus, with a scenic stop at the Porte-Vue in Château-Thébaud, offering stunning views over the Sèvre Nantaise valley.

Participation is limited to a maximum of 50 participants and will be allocated on a first-paid, first-served basis. If you would like to join, please secure your place by completing the tour registration form here.

Registration deadline for the tour is Sunday, 29 March at midnight (CET).

The 965-kilometre stretch of the Loire River and its tributaries, from the foothills of Massif Central to the city of Nantes, constitutes one of France's leading wine regions. The Upper Loire includes the Sauvignon blanc dominated areas of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The Middle Loire is dominated by more Chenin blanc and Cabernet franc wines, which are produced in the regions around Tours, Saumur, Chinon and Vouvray. In the Lower Loire, the Pays Nantais vineyards are all about white wines.

InterPore invites bids to host the InterPore2029 Annual Meeting, planned for a four-day period in the week of 14 May 2029. For this edition, bids are invited from venues located in Australia, Asia, North Africa, and Canada.

The venue selection will follow a two-stage process. In Stage 1, interested parties are asked to submit a concise bidusing the Stage 1 Bid Submission Form. Based on these submissions, the InterPore Events Committee and Executive Committee will shortlist up to four candidates, who will then be invited to submit detailed proposals in Stage 2.

Key deadline:
Stage 1 bid submission: 19 June 2026

Please send Stage 1 bids to Oleg Iliev (oleg.iliev@itwm.fraunhofer.de) with a copy to conference2029@interpore.org.

The InterPore Time Capsule features video interviews with pioneers of porous media research, reflecting on their careers and the ideas that shaped the field. We invite suggestions for future interviewees with distinguished careers in porous media research, including scientists in nongeological disciplines.

Please send your suggestions to Karolin Weber.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2026 – Prof. Lyesse Laloui

Prof. Lyesse Laloui, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2026.

His next lecture will take place on March 31, at the Lebanese American University, Lebanon (online). On 24 April, he will be in Italy, at the Politecnico di Torino.

We are pleased to announce the InterPore China Chapter Annual Conference 2026, taking place 13–15 July 2026 at Nanjing University Suzhou Campus, China.

This conference will bring together researchers and professionals from academia and industry to explore advances in porous media science and its role in sustainable subsurface energy applications, including carbon storage, hydrogen storage, geothermal energy, and groundwater management.

Poster submission deadline: 30 June 2026
(Posters in English; on-site printing will not be available)

Inspired by the huge success of the Porous Media Tea Time Talks, the InterPore Brazil Committee is launching Brazil Pore Talks, a new platform highlighting porous media research from within Brazil and the Brazilian scientific community overseas. This is a prime opportunity for those who haven’t yet had the chance to present their work at a conference, as well as for those looking to reach a broader audience. The inaugural episode is scheduled for late April. For further details, please contact brazilporetalks@gmail.com.

Climate-driven desiccation cracks significantly alter the movement of heat, water, and mass in porous media. This study combines field statistics, a thermo-hydro-mechanical model, and three years of meteorological data from Qom, Iran, demonstrating that these cracks act as thermal and hydraulic shortcuts. The pathways created by the cracks can seasonally intensify heat flux, concentrate evaporation along the crack walls, and facilitate deeper infiltration into the soil.

Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) have emerged as a viable solution for sustainable energy extraction from hot dry rock reservoirs. In this study, numerical simulations are employed to investigate the optimization of energy extraction from enhanced geothermal systems, focusing on the effects of fracture geometry, the number of fractures, and well spacing on overall system performance and profitability. The results demonstrate that increased well spacing enhances energy output by delaying thermal breakthrough and increasing the optimal injection rates. Economic analyses underscore the importance of operational design in maximizing profitability.
