We’re happy to announce that applications for the InterPore2027 Conference Grants are open!

Here are a few things to keep in mind before applying:

  1. Two types of conference grants are available:
    1. Conference Registration Fee Waiver: covers the InterPore Conference registration fee.
    2. Full Conference Grant: covers the InterPore Conference registration fee plus up to €500 toward travel costs.
  2. Applicants who only require a registration fee waiver are encouraged to select this option, allowing more of the available funding to support applicants who also need assistance with travel costs.
  3. To be eligible to apply, applicants must be presenting at the upcoming InterPore conference and hold a valid InterPore membership.
  4. Please note that a Letter of Support is required for all student applicants.
  5. Applications may be submitted until 15 January 2027 at 23:59. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.
  6. Results will be announced by mid-February.

Sugarloaf Mountain: Geology with a View The Sugarloaf complex is a stunning geological formation connected to Vermelha Beach, Urca Hill, and Sugarloaf Mountain by Brazil’s very first cable car. Going up combines exciting scenic views of Rio with culture, nature, and 113 years of history. Enjoy the summits of either Urca Hill or Sugarloaf. But, why is the mountain called Sugerloaf? Check it out! Ready, set... Rio!

The InterPore Council met on 4 September 2026 and reports on the InterPore Journal developing well, the InterPore election preparations, conference fee spendings and the opening of the InterPore-Kimberly-Clark Industrial Fellowship. Read the full report on our website.

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

The InterPore Japan Chapter National Meeting 2026 will take place on 26 October 2026, in Nagoya, Japan, as part of the National Thermal Engineering Conference 2026.

The National Thermal Engineering Conference is a domestic conference in Japan, and information is available primarily in Japanese. Further details can be found on the official conference website.

The meeting will feature two technical sessions under the theme “Heat Transfer, Fluid Flow, and Mass Transport in Porous Media and Their Applications: From Macro- to Nanoscale.”

The Spanish Chapter will meet in Barcelona on 17-18 November 2026 in E.T.S.I. Caminos, C. y P., Technical University of Catalunya for the next annual Spain InterPore Meeting.

Registration and abstract submission deadline: 31 October 2026

The fourth session of Brazil Pore Talks: Special Edition is now available!

The Brazil InterPore Chapter extends a warm thank you to everyone who tuned in for the fourth edition of Brazil Pore Talks. This session featured a special format highlighting the top three award-winning posters from the recent 9th Brazil InterPore Chapter Conference held this past August.

The InterPore UK Chapter Meeting took place on 1-2 September 2026 at Heriot-Watt University, bringing together researchers across the UK and beyond.

The programme spanned topics including digital & data-driven modelling, uncertainty & decision support, engineering & manufacturing, biological & soft systems, and reactive & environmental systems, alongside a poster session and the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Lyesse Laloui, “Carbon dioxide injection into deep aquifers: a geomechanical perspective.”

Other highlights included international contributions from Marcel Moura and Antoine Dop (PoreLab, Oslo), and Michael Liem (Storra Dynamics) and Student Poster Awards going to Reza Najafi Silab (Heriot-Watt University) and Ismail Hakki (University of Edinburgh).

Here you can find updates to the Academy's events promoting education, training, and research through a variety of activities, including courses, webinars, thematic workshops, and initiatives by the Young Academy.

Check out the upcoming online courses.

PORE 2-2 led by Maja Rücker (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands), Catherine Spurin (Stanford University, USA), and Benzhong (Robin) Zhao (McMaster University, Canada) on imaging porous media across scales. Check it out: Academy Course: PORE 2-2

PORE 2-8.1 led by Hadi Hajibeygi (Delft University, the Netherlands) to gain an in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with multiscale simulation of multiphase flow in fractured reservoirs.

At-scale energy decarbonization will require extraordinary volumes of rare earth elements (REEs)–materials. In this talk, assistant professor Wen Song (University of Texas at Austin) will discuss opportunities to supplement the REEs supply using industrial wastes such as coal ash wastes, approaches to their cos-effective extraction, and challenges preventing their at-scale implementation.

News, events and activities from all around the porous media community

Dr. Rita Esuru Okoroafor, assistant professor in Texas A&M University’s Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering, received the National Science Foundation’s highest honor for early-career faculty, for her research on understanding and sustaining hydrogen generation from reactive rocks deep beneath the Earth’s surface.

Congratulations to Dr.Okoroafor!

InterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore InJournals section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).
The highlight should be short (max. 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.

Predicting how dissolved substances move through partially saturated porous media is challenging because uneven flow can cause some material to move rapidly while some is retained for much longer. We use detailed pore-scale simulations to test whether commonly used larger-scale models can reliably represent these underlying transport processes. Our results show that models can reproduce observed breakthrough behaviour while still producing parameters that do not accurately reflect the physical processes occurring within the pore space. This matters for improving predictions of solute and contaminant transport in environmental and engineering applications, including groundwater and subsurface systems.

A novel data-driven deep-learning approach predicts the dynamical evolution of reactive dissolution in porous media by jointly modelling spatial and temporal features. Unlike previous deep-learning methods, the approach captures the coupled evolution of multiple interacting fields, including concentration, porosity, and flow rates. Error accumulation is reduced by using a multi-level iterative stacking pipeline. Evaluated on a numerical simulation dataset, the method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in prediction accuracy while achieving a speedup of over traditional numerical solvers.
