Formulation and Probabilistic Assessment of Reversible Biodegradation Pathway of Diclofenac in Groundwater
Laura Ceresa, Alberto Guadagnini, Giovanni M. Porta, Monica Riva
Pharmaceuticals can be a critical source of concern for the quality of groundwater bodies. Analyses and interpretations are plagued by data scarcity and limited knowledge on attenuation mechanisms and potential biodegradation pathways driving the fate of pharmaceuticals in soil-water environments. In this context, we model the reversible biodegradation pathway of Diclofenac in groundwater. The model embeds key reaction mechanisms and is framed in a stochastic inverse modeling context, considering scarce availability of information. The workflow enables quantifying uncertainties of model parameters and outputs. Results are consistent with the behavior of Diclofenac in groundwater documented through experimental data and underline the importance of assessing estimates of the hazard posed by Diclofenac to water resources through a modeling strategy which fully embeds uncertainty quantification.
