InterPore News featuring: New committee members Industrial PhD Research Fellowship

Sent on: 30-10-2026

Dear InterPore colleagues,

As scientist, how much time do we actually spend on interactions with other people? I mean, discuss, analyze, criticize, suffer from, cope with, and enjoy interactions. I think a lot! There is a social scientist in all of us… It can be fun but also challenging, in particular to freshmen landing their first job, e.g. as a PhD student. It is a delicate balance between character building and looking after each other.

Today's edition features the new committee overseeing the applications for the Industrial PhD Research Fellowship. Shaping our future scientists!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

We are pleased to welcome Ryan Armstrong of UNSW Sydney, Australia, as an invited speaker at InterPore2027.

In his lecture, “Evolving Interfaces, Geometric Memory, and Non-equilibrium States in Multiphase Flow,” Armstrong will explore how the changing shapes and connectivity of fluids within porous materials influence flow, trapping, and transport.

His research offers a new perspective on multiphase flow, examining how the three-dimensional geometry of fluid interfaces can help explain hysteresis and improve predictive models. These insights are particularly relevant to subsurface applications such as CO₂ and hydrogen storage.

InterPore2027 Minisymposium Spotlights

The InterPore2027 scientific program brings together a broad range of topics across porous media research. This week, we're highlighting three minisymposia covering energy and climate, advanced imaging, and subsurface modeling.

How can porous media research contribute to a low-carbon future? MS01 explores applications in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and other technologies supporting the energy transition. Contributions spanning experiments, numerical modeling, machine learning, and upscaling are encouraged.

Closely aligned with the InterPore2027 focus theme, Imaging of Porous Materials, MS10 highlights advances in imaging technologies, image processing, and data analysis. Topics include X-ray tomography, MRI, electron microscopy, synchrotron and neutron imaging, and innovative approaches to visualizing porous structures and dynamic processes.

Have research to share? Explore these and the other InterPore2027 minisymposia and submit your abstract by 11 January 2027.

Tijuca National Park: A Rainforest Inside the City Many InterPore 2027 attendees are nature lovers, but even for those who aren't, Rio de Janeiro offers a wonderful escape: an entire forest right inside the city. Tijuca National Park provides an extraordinary journey through scenic trails, waterfalls, wildlife, and breathtaking viewpoints. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, the park is a preserved piece of the Atlantic Forest in the heart of Rio. You can make your trip to attend InterPore 2027 even more memorable by exploring Brazil's most visited national park. Ready, set... Rio!

The InterPore - Kimberly-Clark Industrial PhD Research Fellowship is awarded to outstanding doctoral students with the goal of advancing the science and engineering of porous media while fostering long-term collaboration between academia and industry.

Established by InterPore and Kimberly-Clark Corporation, this annual fellowship recognizes one exceptional PhD student, offering hands-on industrial research experience and global academic recognition

We would like to welcome the members of the new Committee:

  • Dwayne Jackson, Ph.D., Kimberly-Clark Corporation, USA
  • Richmond Cohen, Ph.D., Kimberly-Clark Corporation, USA
  • Dr. Seetha Narayanan, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, India

Prof. Lyesse Laloui, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2026. Coming up in November, he will present his lectures at TU Delft, the Netherlands, on 4 November, and at the 7th Annual Spain InterPore Meeting in Barcelona, Spain, on 17 November.

Meet the InterPore Community: National Chapters are dynamic, country-wide groups within InterPore that bring together researchers, professionals, and students working in porous media science and engineering. These chapters act as local hubs for scientific exchange, collaboration, and networking, while contributing to the global mission of InterPore.

The Spanish Chapter will meet in Barcelona on 17-18 November 2026 in E.T.S.I. Caminos, C. y P., Technical University of Catalunya for the next annual Spain InterPore Meeting.

Registration and abstract submission deadline: 31 October 2026

The 7th InterPore BeNeLux Chapter Meeting will be organised jointly with the upcoming edition of the International Symposium on Wettability and Porous Media. The event takes place between 30 November 30th and 2 December in Amsterdam.

The first day is dedicated to the InterPore BeNeLux Chapter, but we encourage you strongly to register and attend all three days of this event, which has a lot of offer. Details and a list of invited speakers can be found via the link below.

Registration Deadline: 1 Nov 2026
