InterPore News featuring a massive elephant!

Sent on: 11-12-2025

Dear InterPore colleagues,

When looking forward to InterPore2026, I realized that the city of Nantes has the superlative to the metaphorical ‘elephant in the room’. Check out this enormous mechanical monster below in ‘Sightseeing hunt…. in Nantes’. I definitely need to go to Nantes, as seeing is believing!

Meanwhile, it is always great to announce researchers taking up (new) roles for InterPore, often replacing someone who steps down after many years of great service, and I like to add that the ones stepping down, often remain active for InterPore as advisors or in some different role. Thanks to those dedicated to InterPore for all your hard work making the InterPore community the special community it is!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

InterPore2026 will be in Nantes. This week's cultural highlight: The Grand Elephant

The Grand Elephant, a 12-meter-tall mechanical elephant, is part of Les Machines de l’Île (The Machines of the Isle of Nantes) in Nantes, France. It can carry up to 50 passengers for a slow ride through the exhibition area, while interacting with its surroundings, especially by spraying water from its trunk. The entire venue is located in the former shipyards of Nantes and is inspired by the imaginary worlds of Jules Verne (a native of Nantes), Leonardo da Vinci, and industrial machinery.

We are delighted to announce that Prof. Lynn Schreyer (Washington State University, USA) will serve as Chair of the Program Committee for InterPore2027! She will take over the role following InterPore2026 from Prof. Jaime Gómez-Hernández, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks for his outstanding leadership and dedication.

We are pleased to announce the call for bids to host InterPore2028, which will take place in Europe on either May 9–12 or May 16–19, 2028. We invite institutions and organizations interested in serving as the local host to submit their proposals to help shape another successful and engaging conference.

The InterPore DEI Committee is looking for new members - we aim to comprise a group that represents the breadth of InterPore membership, including geographic and career level diversity. We are particularly in need of committee members who can speak to the perspectives of InterPore members from Africa and South America, and folks who are in more senior career positions (post-tenure or equivalent).

Please apply with a letter of intent to DEI@InterPore.org by 31 July 2025.

We are delighted to announce that Marcel Moura has been appointed as the new Chair, and Sarah Perez as the new Co-Chair, of the InterPore Student Awards and Grants Sub-Committee. Thank you both for stepping into these key leadership roles — the InterPore Office looks forward to working closely with you!
