Hossein Hejazi
Hossein Hejazi is a Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary, where he leads the Interfacial Flows and Porous Media Laboratory and serves as Associate Department Head of the Energy Engineering Program. His research spans scales from interfacial and wetting phenomena at the pore level to multiphase flow, heat transfer, and reaction in porous media. Combining experiments, microfluidics, advanced visualization, and modelling, his group addresses underground hydrogen and CO₂ storage, enhanced resource recovery, geothermal systems, and biomedical applications. His work has appeared in journals including Water Resources Research, Transport in Porous Media, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and Geophysical Research Letters.
An InterPore member since 2016, Hejazi has served the Society through its election committee and website evaluation task force, helped establish the University of Calgary as an institutional member, organized and co-chaired sessions at multiple Annual Conferences, and served on the Editorial Board of InterPore Journal since 2023. Beyond InterPore, he has held leadership roles in national and international research organizations, including Vice President of the Energy Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada and Technical Director of a ~$12M Canada–Mexico research network that established a specialized porous-media research laboratory at UNAM and supported the training of more than 30 researchers. He has mentored more than 50 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate researchers, and visiting scholars, many of whom have progressed to academic, research, and industry careers internationally. His contributions have been recognized by the 2025 SPE Regional Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, Canada Region, as well as Schulich School of Engineering awards for research and teaching excellence.
He aims to broaden opportunities for students and early-career researchers within InterPore, strengthen connections between fundamental porous-media research and applied engineering, and contribute to the continued growth and international impact of the Society and InterPore Journal.
