Issue #17, 30 August 2024

Content

Dear InterPore colleagues,

A delayed Newsletter due to a malfunction on our website. I know from coding complex computer models that a misplaced semicolon or a simple typo can corrupt days of calculations. In the Netherlands, we had an airport closed and national and local governments with problems in their systems, all due to a software mistake last week. And similarly, global problems occurred recently due to a bug in a software update.

“Get used to it,” said a Dutch minister. All our systems are tied together into a massive network. I admit that this is why I also keep data on an old-fashioned hard drive. Should the internet fail, I have no excuse to stop working…

In any case, we’re up and running, and it was again a pleasure to collect all relevant news for you, such as our new issue of the InterPore Journal, also a special issue lead by InterPore colleagues, the elections coming up, jobs, etc., etc..

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Behzad Ghanbarian University of Texas at Arlington, USA

Title: Effect of scale on flow and transport properties in porous media

Behzad Ghanbarian is an Associate Professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Texas at Arlington. His research interests center around a wide range of multidisciplinary topics, such as climate change, unconventional reservoirs, upscaling techniques, and fluid flow and contaminant transport in heterogeneous porous media.

“A long-standing problem in the porous media community, therefore, has been relating a property’s value at one scale (e.g., field) to its value at another scale (e.g., core). In this talk, I focus on finite size effect and present applications of…” (read the full abstract here)

Must see…. in Albuquerque!

InterPore2025 will be in Albuquerque. This week’s cultural highlight: Discovering Route 66

Route 66, the iconic “Mother Road”, has a rich history and deep significance in Albuquerque. Established in 1926, this historic highway stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica with Albuquerque serving as a key stop along the way.

Route 66 runs through the heart of Albuquerque, providing a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of American road trips. Travelers can explore a variety of must-visit stops along Central Avenue, the city’s main section of the highway.

Start your journey at the historic KiMo Theatre, a beautiful Pueblo Deco-style building dating back to 1927. Nearby, the Albuquerque Museum offers insights into the city’s cultural and artistic heritage. For a taste of the past, visit the 66 Diner, where classic American fare is served in a retro setting. Further along, the Nob Hill neighborhood boasts vibrant shops, galleries, and restaurants, all reflecting the eclectic spirit of Route 66. Don’t miss the neon signs that light up the night, evoking memories of mid-20th-century Americana.

Route 66 in Albuquerque is more than a road; it’s a living museum of the city’s history, culture, and enduring charm, making it an essential experience for any visitor.

Chapter News

The 7th Brazil InterPore Chapter Conference on Porous Media was held from 12 – 14 August 2024, at the Casa da Cultura, part of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in Salinópolis, Pará, Brazil. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time the InterPore conference took place in the northern region of Brazil.

The conference focused on cutting-edge research, methods, applications, and theoretical advances in porous media, and covered a wide range of topics. In addition to the seven international attendees were 92 participants from all across Brazil at the conference, representing several regions (north, northeast, south, and southeast).

See the full report and Annual Meeting Program for more detail.

In 2025, the 8th Brazilian Chapter Conference in Porous Media will take place on the main Campus of the Federal University of Santa Catarina – UFSC. At the heart of the Florianópolis island, the Reitor João David Ferreira Lima Campus, also known as Trindade Campus, is located a few kilometers from some important places in the city, such as the International Airport, bus station, downtown, and the main touristic sights, like Lagoa da Conceição, beaches, and the historic iron bridge Hercílio Luz.

New Course Offering in Study Plan in Porous Media

Don’t miss your chance to register for our next course in the Study Plan in Porous Media: PORE 2-4 Capillarity in porous media at different scales

Image removed.

In this course, a systematic approach is taken to the understanding of capillarity in porous media on different scales. Current definitions of capillary pressure, which have mainly an empirical character, are revisited, and it is shown that they are special cases of a more general theory of capillarity.

Learn more about the topics that will be covered here.

Please note that all lectures will be offered live. Participants are expected to attend all lectures in order to be granted certificates of attendance.

Ongoing conflicts around the world demand our attention, but does also generate a despondent sense of “I can’t do anything about it”. The ISC provides an overview of possible actions to help scientists in Gaza and scientists in Sudan.

InterPore has been a member of the International Science Counsel since 2020. The ISC is an international organization comprised of more than 245 member societies, organizations, academies, and associations from all fields of science, with the mission “to act as the global voice for science.”

Special issue Philosophical Transactions A: ‘Induced seismicity in coupled subsurface systems’

Compiled and edited by Dr. Adriana Paluszny, Dr. Ryan Schultz and Prof. Günter Zimmermann

Image removed.

Induced seismicity, or human-caused earthquakes, can occur due to stress changes in the subsurface during activities such as carbon storage and geothermal energy extraction. Understanding and managing this risk is crucial for the future of green energy technologies, including hydrogen and compressed air storage, which are vital for reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security. The articles in this issue discuss novel findings on how the injection, storage, and withdrawal of fluids into the subsurface affect the onset and magnitude of seismicity. They explore physics-based evidence of the factors controlling the deformation of faults at depth, proposing models to forecast and quantify this deformation. These findings collectively contribute to evidence-based policymaking and regulatory processes, promoting the development of large-scale renewable energy, energy storage, and decarbonisation technologies reliant on sustainable subsurface operations.
