Issue #09, 29 April 2022
Dear InterPore colleagues,
April the 27th is “Kingsday” in the Netherlands, a day that everyone wears orange clothes, visits flea markets for children (basically a redistribution of toys), where adults participate in all sorts of (funny) sport competitions and enjoy festivities in general. Foreign visitors are usually flabbergasted when visiting… This year was particularly joyful because of the absence of any Corona-measures for the first time in a few years. A good old party!
Of course, not all parts of the world can be free from Corona-measures already, and also the war in Ukraine still dominates the news, but the festivities gave a hopeful glimpse towards being together again. Obviously, I immediately remember the wonderful time in Valencia (InterPore2019) and hope –fingers crossed– Abu Dhabi (InterPore2022) can be like that again!
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter

Thermo Fisher Scientific is proud to be a Platinum InterPore member and to support the InterPore community.
Our digital analytical labs solutions, Thermo Scientific™ PerGeos™ Software and Thermo Scientific™ Avizo™ Software, are advanced, easy-to-use, customizable and fully automatable, tailored for rock and porous media analysis. Thermo Scientific software help petroleum engineers and researchers working in the Oil & Gas industry to obtain answers from imaging data.
Improve your reservoir understanding and evaluation thanks to meaningful and actionable data
From Core to Pore, using imaging from large CT to FIB/SEM systems, PerGeos Software helps you digitally understand and validate observations and properties of your rock data with a high level of confidence. Ability to interpret images at multiple resolutions from multiple modalities, advanced 2D/3D and 3D/3D registration tools, and adaptive thresholding make PerGeos Software a unique digital platform for powerful up-scaling workflows. This allows geological and petrophysical properties to be numerically obtained with confidence since all scales of the pore space can be analyzed and interpreted to calculate properties such as global porosity or relative permeability.

When you think of Abu Dhabi, you probably think desert, right? Did you know that Abu Dhabi is also home to Mangrove National Park? Just outside Abu Dhabi city center and only minutes away from Khalifa University, this beautiful and surprising park continues to be one of the emirate’s most important ecological assets, protected by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD). Several outfitters offer kayaking tours through the lush habitat. Learn more about the mangroves and kayaking tours on the Visit Abu Dhabi-website.

InterPore Elections 2022: Call for Nominations
InterPore Elections are coming up, spanning an election period from 1 – 30 November 2022. With this announcement, we wish to inform the Society members about the details of the election procedure.
Who will be elected: One President-Elect, four Council members and four members of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC).
Who is conducting the elections: The Election Committee, chaired by Prof. Gabriel Wittum.
Who can vote? All current InterPore members.
Nomination Committee: In accordance with the InterPore bylaws, a Nomination Committee has been formed, chaired by Prof. Laura Pyrak-Nolte, Purdue University, USA, email. Members of the Nomination Committee are:
How to nominate: Please volunteer to run for an office and/or nominate candidates now; please contact Laura Pyrak-Nolte or any other member of the Nomination Committee. Criteria for the selection of candidates by EC and approval by the Council are (1) personal qualifications, (2) balancing industry and academic/research institutions, and (3) ensuring – as much as possible – gender and geographical balance. Only nominees who agree to serve, once elected, will be accepted.
More information on the committees involved and the election procedure can be found here and feel free to contact Laura Pyrak-Nolte for any related questions.
Nomination deadline: 1 July 2022.
Are you a BSc, MSc or PhD candidate? Or do you know a very talented young researcher in those categories? The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) is currently seeking nominations for four members. Nominations are open to all InterPore members (including members through Institutional Memberships) who are enrolled in porous media activities. You can nominate yourself or others (with their permission!).
Becoming a SAC member brings fun on a global scale and potentially boosts your career, either within the academia or within the industry. Check here the current SAC members.
For nominations, please send the following info to Laura Pyrak-Nolte:
The election will be held in November 2022, and all members of the InterPore community are encouraged to vote. The elected members of the SAC will be publicly announced in the InterPore newsletter. Elected members will be part of the SAC for 4 years. For more information about the SAC activities, you can always send the committee an email.
Research Spotlight
In recent years, the research activities of the Brazil Interpore Chapter have become increasingly more active and prominent. Across the country, new groups are emerging in cooperation to seek a better understanding of a wide range of porous media systems through basic and applied research. It is well known that Brazil holds a considerable amount of the global renewable freshwater, which in turn depends on the quality of groundwater. Porous media systems also have a huge impact on energy, especially on oil recovery in the pre-salt area off the marine coast of Brazil. This scientific research and innovation aligns with Brazilian’s society aim to advance fields such as Agriculture, Synchrotron light, Microfluidics, Mathematics of porous media flow, Oil Science, Modeling of complex fluid displacement in porous media, and Multiscale numerical methods. Here we highlight some of the interdisciplinary research of new small groups in the Brazilian scientific community that fosters and carries out research related to porous media systems. This is just a glimpse of the opportunities in Brazil.

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship report
The Kimberly-Clarck Distinguished Lecturship Award, awarded by Interpore, was part of the MOX Colloquia, a seminar series organized by the MOX Laboratoriy of Politecnico di Milano (Institutional Member of InterPore) in the fields of mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, statistics, scientific computing.
Over 40 people took part to the event in person, whereas about 30 people were connected online.
During his talk Prof. Huyghe discussed the importance of blood perfusion in the heart. Indeed, if mechanical structures fail due to stress concentration and cracking, failure of the human heart is usually associated to a mismatch between blood perfusion and metabolic needs. The branching structure of the vascular system requires an ad hoc modeling as pressure compartment in the context of a poro-mechanical model of the beating heart. In particular, the multiscale structure of the cardiac tissue needs a specially designed constitutive poro-viscoelastic model. In the subsequent discussion Prof. Hyughe answered several questions from an audience formed mainly by applied mathematicians working in geological porous media or in the modeling of the cardiovascular system, addressing technical points of his talk and giving his personal view on future lines of research.

Subsurface characterization is critical in understanding and controlling many natural and industrial processes. While recent advances in 3D imaging have enabled digital subsurface characterization, the exorbitant computational cost associated with direct numerical simulation remains a persistent challenge. Here, we introduce a novel 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) for end-to-end prediction of permeability. We show that increasing the dataset size and diversity, utilizing multi-scale feature aggregation, and optimizing network architecture elevate the model accuracy beyond that of existing state-of-the-art 3D CNN models. We demonstrate that the model is generalizable and capable of predicting the permeability of previously unseen samples with excellent accuracy.
