Research Spotlight: University of
Cincinnati

Groundwater luminary Charles Vernon Theis (1900-1987) earned his undergraduate and
master’s (1922) degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati (UC). The Theis
Environmental Monitoring and Modeling Site (TEMMS), named after CV Theis, was established in 2017.
The UC Hydrogeology Group, led by Dr. Reza Soltanian, is maintaining and using the TEMMS to develop
a fundamental understanding of the effects of coupled hydrologic, biogeochemical, and microbial
processes within river corridors on groundwater quality. Continuous redox monitoring at the TEMMS
has been used to understand the effects of …

Awards and membership elections

Dr. Víctor Vilarrasa
Riaño from the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research of the Spanish
National Research Council (IDAEA-CSIC) in Spain has been elected to the Global Young Academy.

Victor joins an international and interdisciplinary science dialogue as civil engineer in the field
of hydrogeology and geomechanics. A great example of how porous media scientists are strongly
connected to any global challenges.

Congratulations, Victor, and good luck!
