InterPore News featuring New SAGSC members

Sent on: 10-12-2025

Dear InterPore colleagues,

Last Wednesday, I joined the first EquiPore activity, which was an open Mentor-Mentee event. Thanks to the organizers for arranging a really nice get-together with people from across the planet. And for those who missed it, do make sure to tap in for the next event!

We’ve got a very decent Newsletter for you today. Decent, because we’re improving the layout (have you noticed? It's a work in progress!) and also because of content. The new edition of the InterPore Journal is published, a great event took place in France, the SAGSC welcomes new members, InterPore2026 updates, and perhaps inspiration from one of the invited speakers.

Enjoy!

InterPore News

Just over four weeks remain to submit your abstracts for InterPore2026! The submission deadline is 05 January (midnight PST).

We invite researchers, practictioners, and students to share their latest findings on the physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering of porous media.

A reminder that the InterPore Foundation is offering conference grants for researchers from low- and middle-income countries and graduate students. Grants cover the registration fee, and selected recipients receive up to an additional €500 for travel. Applicants must have an accepted presentation at InterPore2026 and hold current InterPore membership. Awards are based on academic achievement and abstract quality.

Apply online by 5 January.

Prof. Katharine Maher from Stanford University, USA, will give a lecture on coupling physical and chemical processes that govern carbon dioxide removal in the context of struggles with the agreed and required removal of 100 - 300 gigatons, as stated in the Paris Agreement.

Flow, Transport and Mechanics in Fractured Porous Media is led by Gege Wen and brings together researchers advancing numerical, multiscale, and machine learning approaches for modeling flow, transport, and mechanics in fractured systems, with a focus on applications such as carbon storage, underground thermal energy storage, and enhanced geothermal systems.

Complex Fluids & Fluid–Solid–Thermal Coupling in Porous Media is led by Yingfang Zhou and focuses on the intricate interactions between fluids, solids, and heat in porous materials—processes central to energy extraction, storage, environmental systems, and advanced materials. Topics span geo-energy and geo-environment applications to insulation materials under extreme conditions.

Royal de Luxe is a renowned French street-theatre company. Since 1989, it has been based in Nantes, where the city provided large workshop spaces that allowed the group to create ambitious, large-scale productions. Known for its spectacular giant puppets and imaginative urban performances, the company has become a major cultural symbol of Nantes.

The latest edition of the InterPore Journal was published online on Monday, 1 December. This issue brings together the following articles, all of which represent a diverse set of contributions that reflect both the technical depth and the expanding impact of porous media research.

Prof. Rainer Helmig, from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, is wrapping up his lectureship as the awardee of the the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2025. So far this year, he has presented 21 lectures in universities and institutions all over the world, and has three more scheduled.

Prof. Helmig’s latest presentation took place at Shell, and on December 18th, he will travel to Belgium to speak at Hasselt University. In early 2026, he will visit the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and NTNU in Norway.

We also remind you that applications to host Prof. Lyesse Laloui, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, are still open. If your university/institution is interested in hosting Prof. Laloui, please fill out the application form in our website.

For detailed information about the lectures, please visit Prof. Laloui’s page.

The 17th Journées d’Études des Milieux Poreux (JEMP), organized by the France InterPore Chapter, was a great success. The conference took place in downtown Orléans from 4-6 November and brought together nearly 180 participants (students, academics or industrials).

Many thanks to all those who joined this week’s webinar with Samintha Perera, Australian Research Council Future Fellow and senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne on “Underground Hydrogen Storage in Depleted Hydrocarbon Reservoirs: Uncertainties in Reservoir Integrity.

For those who missed out, you can view a recording of the session here.

We hope to see you again in the new year for our next webinar. Visit the InterPore Academy page for more details on our 2026 schedule.

Two courses return upon request. Therefore, January 2026 is featuring:

IDS’26 in Paris extended their deadline to 31 December. IDS stands for International Drying Symposium, and the next edition will be held in August 2026.

Reza Haghani and Carl Fredrik Berg

In this work, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of numerical methods to determine wettability distributions in porous media based on 3D micro-CT images, focusing on six categories: geometry-, topology-, multiphase-, machine learning-, thermodynamic-, and event-based methods.

Have you checked out the InterPore Journal yet? If not, you can view the current issue here.

We also invite you to consider submitting your next work to the InterPore Journal. Your participation and support are crucial to the success of this society journal and our collective advancement in porous media science and technology.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication to our community!
