Dear InterPore colleagues,
Suppose we push alternating pulses of air with ~95% relative humidity (37 degrees C) and air with
40-50% rel. humidity (20 degrees C) through a thin fabric. The temperature of the fabric increases,
but won’t reach 37 degrees C, so condensation occurs, leading to water accumulation in the fabric,
which increases the resistance to air flow. What will be the final load of condensed water in the
fabric?
I don’t think it would be fair to ask this question during an BSc exam, but nowadays we do perform
this experiment on a daily basis. The fabric is, of course, a face mask. If you wear a face mask and
you don’t accumulate a lot of water in the mask, where did it go? Most likely around the edges
(outward leakage) or through the mask. Through the mask!? That is something I will be thinking about
when I sit at the beach this summer. Luckily, my kids will order me to build them a sand castle, so
I can consider other hydrogeological processes as well!
Enjoy reading this wonderful newsletter and all the best,
Matthijs de Winter

InterPore2022
Prof. Laura de
Lorenzis from the ETH Zürich (Switzerland) will give a plenary talk entitled
“Phase-field modeling and simulation of desiccation-induced cracking.” She will
discuss their model which describes the coupling of deformation, fluid flow and fracture in
partially saturated materials.
More information on Prof. de Lorenzis and other plenary speakers can be found on the InterPore2022
website.
The preliminary list of minisymposia for InterPore2022 has been put together. The list already
includes the following topics, while suggestions for additional topics are welcome:
Short descriptions of all the minisymposia can be found on the InterPore2022 website.
Website Task Force
It is with pleasure that we announce the establishment of a Task Force specifically devoted to the
curation of our website. The Task Force has already started combing the web pages to identify
outdated information, broken links, or other weak spots. We will then enter a phase where the
graphic design of the pages will be analyzed.
Key members of the Task Force include:
Meghan McCarroll, Webmaster
Karolin Weber, Executive Officer of InterPore
Amy Spang, InterPore Secretary
Alberto Guadagnini, Chair of the InterPore Communication Committee
Giovanni Porta, InterPore Communication Committee
Davide Bonzi, Student, Università degli Studi di Milano
While some improvements are already underway, we would like to ask for your collaboration to
continuously improve our internet platform to make it accessible, inclusive, and professional. If
you see a broken (or malfunctioning) link, or some outdated information, we encourage you to contact us. We are grateful for any suggestions and
comments.
Twitter volunteer wanted
We are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to join our Social Media Task Force to be
in charge of our Twitter account. Please email us
if you are interested.
4th Brazilian Chapter Meeting
The 4th Brazil Chapter
Meeting (4th BR-InterPore) took place in Brazil from 2-4 August 2021. The 4th BR-InterPore
ran in full virtual conference mode, keeping in mind the worldwide time zones, and was free of
charge. We had 222 participants from 21 countries around the world, 166 from Brazil and 56 from
abroad (South America, USA, Europe, Asia), from academia and industry (professionals, graduate
students, post-docs and professors).
For more information about the 4th BR-InterPore as well as all presentations of the 18 distinguished
speakers given there, please visit the 4th BR-InterPore
website.
We will (attempt to) run 5th in Rio Grande do Norte, in the northeast of Brazil, in the first or
second week of August 2022. We will add the link to the 5th BR-InterPore site as soon as it
becomes available. We hope to see you – physically or virtually – at 5th BR-InterPore next year
in 2022!
On behalf of the Brazil
InterPore Chapter,
Kind regards,

Album of Porous Media Structure and
Dynamics
LAST CALL for pictures!!!
Don’t miss the chance to be part of the FIRST album exclusively dedicated to capture the beauty and
complexity of porous media!
The intent of the Album of Porous Media Structure and Dynamics, is to compile a collection of
eye-catching, state-of-the-art visualizations of the different science and engineering aspects of
porous media as well as to serve as a reference for research and education.
For more information, please visit our website.
Deadline for submissions is 15 August 2021.
Short courses – Recorded and Upcoming
The advantage of online short courses is the opportunity of recording the course and making it
accessible to those who couldn’t join when the course was taught. The InterPore Academy is offering
the possibility to follow recorded short courses given previously. This
flyer provides a list of available short courses and directs you further to the
registration process.
New short courses are also scheduled. The second
flyer provides a list with upcoming short courses and related details.
New Chair of Webinar Committee
We are happy to announce that Prof. Holger Steeb
has been appointed as Chair of the Webinar Committee of the InterPore Academy. With this, the
Scientific Advisory Board of the Academy is completed. The full Scientific Advisory Board of the
Academy can be found here. More
information on the Academy’s webinars can be found here.
16th Chinese National Conference
on Porous Flow Mechanics
The 16th Chinese National Conference on Porous Flow Mechanics was held from 29 July to
1 August 2021 in Huludao city, organized by Liaoning Technical University. More than 300
participants attended this conference. Prof. Yangsheng Zhao and Prof. Zhangxing Chen both gave
plenary speeches. In 7 parallel sessions, 31 invited presentations and 133 session presentations
were held. At the closing ceremony, Prof. Laigui Wang gave an invited report on how to apply to the
National Natural Science Foundation of China. All the participants showed lively discussion on
topics, such as oil and gas flow in porous media.
SaltMechX: deadline extension
6-8 July 2022, Utrecht, the Netherlands: 10th Conference on the Mechanical Behavior of Salt
(SaltMech X)
Launched in 1981, the SaltMech Conference series serves to
exchange research findings and practical experiences regarding the mechanical behavior of rock salt
in the context of safe use in mining, energy storage and waste disposal.
Deadline abstract submission: Friday, 27 August 2021

Promote your Publication
InterPore Members, do you want to promote your publication to the community? If so, please submit
your highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org.
Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an
Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore
endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis.
The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).*
The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration.
