National Symposium on Porous Media Research & India InterPore Chapter Kickoff Meeting

The Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) in association with the India InterPore Chapter successfully organized the National Symposium on Porous Media Research on 2nd August 2025 at the Convention Centre, IIT Hyderabad. This event brought together a dynamic community of researchers, scholars, and industry experts from across diverse areas of porous media. With around 70 participants, 2 keynote talks, 12 invited talks, 35 poster presentations, and a panel discussion, the symposium fostered rich scientific exchange and collaboration. The event was generously supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (Government of India), DSS Image Tech Pvt Ltd, Shell India Pvt Ltd, Campbell Scientific, Association of Hydrologists of India, Central Ground Water Board, and SUEZ India Pvt Ltd.

The invited and keynote talks spanned across a wide spectrum of topics including flow and transport in soil and groundwater, water filtration, soil aquifer treatment, managed aquifer recharge, enhanced oil recovery, CO₂ geological sequestration, deformation in soft porous medium, remediation of contaminated sites, membranes for water treatment, transport through plants, bacterial cellulose for wound healing, fuel cells and electrolyzers, and glycerol permeation through human aquaporin. The symposium also hosted a panel discussion on the ‘Future directions of porous media research in India’ which emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for fostering the porous media research in the country. The day concluded with the India InterPore Chapter meeting which discussed the future course of activities of the India Chapter including electing the steering committee and hosting the next annual gathering. The next India InterPore meeting will be held at IIT Jodhpur in October 2026 (tentatively).
