Sebastiano Minelli
I am a PhD candidate at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). I started my PhD in 2025, right after graduating in Mathematical Engineering from the same University. My PhD project is framed in the context of a collaboration between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Mathematics. Specifically, I aim to develop a new conceptual and mathematical framework that incorporates the natural nano- and micro-scale heterogeneity of mineral-fluid interfaces in reactive transport modeling in porous media. In this sense, my research is set at the nexus between reactive transport, geochemistry, surface physics, applied mathematics, and numerical modeling. I am committed to blend all these aspects to advance porous media science from a fundamental research perspective.
During this first year of PhD, I have been actively engaged in tutoring and teaching assistance activities associated with the undergraduate courses of Fluid Mechanics (EnergyEngineering curriculum) and Applied Hydraulics (Building and Construction Engineering curriculum), and the MSc course of Fundamentals of Oil and Gas Engineering (Energy Engineering curriculum). Such a close contact with Bachelor and Master students helped me realize the importance of communicating science among young people.
I came in contact with InterPore through the research activities of my group. Politecnico di Milano is an Institutional Member of InterPore and I have followed several events organized by the society, such as InterPore and Porous Media Tea Time Talks webinars. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to join InterPore SAC! I am deeply convinced that sharing ideas and promoting networking opportunities is the best way to build lasting connections among the next generation of scientists. If elected, I will introduce new ways to broaden, expand, and connect the InterPore community among young researchers. I think that social events that promote scientific exchange are very effective means to achieve this goal. During my first year of PhD, I realized that the surrounding environment is key for personal and professional growth. Engaging with more experienced scientists and collaborators, sharing ideas, and exchanging perspectives have strengthened my critical thinking, helped me develop new skills, and opened my eyes to innovative approaches and opportunities that I had not previously considered. I will introduce more seminars, informal talks, and meetings with senior and inspiring researchers to favor knowledge transfer professional development between leading scientists and the next generation of porous media researchers. I plan to organize these events throughout the year, as complementary to the activities organized during the InterPore annual conference. This will foster the development of a strong, connected community of young researchers that shares the same passion for porous media science and remains closely linked worldwide, regardless of physical distance.
