I am a first-year PhD candidate at PoreLab at NTNU, where I work on the physical interpretation and development of a novel approach to the upscaling problem in two-phase flow in porous media. I completed my MSc last year at the same institution, working on a different but related topic, with statistical mechanics being the common thread. When I started my PhD I was quickly alerted to the importance of attending conferences in fostering an academic identity as well as getting new input and ideas. Having attended my first conferences this year, InterPore in Nantes among them, I was struck by how true this turned out to be. The sense of community I experienced left me wanting to contribute, and I particularly believe that strong connections between early-career academics are crucial to encourage a further career in the field. Thus, I specifically appreciated the SAC-arranged activities that took place during InterPore. Being very early in my career is itself part of what I would bring: that I can vividly recall my introduction to the InterPore community and the conference experience. I would cherish the opportunity to help further everything that works well today, and also develop new ideas to promote student interactions and knowledge sharing – with a particular focus on making the experience of first-time attendees the best it can be. This could be done through something like a pre-conference online orientation on how to get the most out of your first InterPore, paired with a brief feedback survey, so the SAC can see what students actually find useful rather than guessing. I would be glad to serve, and equally glad to hear from students about what they would like the SAC to be.
