Join Nicolae Tomozeiu for his course “Thin porous media and complex fluids: interactions in printing” on Sunday before the conference. This course explores the interaction between ink droplets and porous paper, covering topics such as ink properties, droplet formation, jetting, spreading, evaporation, and absorption. Additionally, it examines latex film formation and its impact on print color quality. The course integrates experimental techniques like spectroscopy, microscopy, and computational simulations to analyze and predict print quality based on ink composition and layer characteristics.

The 2025 Annual Meeting of InterPore Norwegian Chapter will take place in Bergen 13-14 May 2025 under the title "Bergen Conference on Modeling and Simulation of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics". This is a joint conference with the VISTA-funded Center for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics. Registration is now open.

We are pleased to announce the 8th InterPore Brazil Chapter Conference on Porous Media, which will be held at Florianópolis-SC, Trindade Campus, 11-13 August 2025.

The Call for Abstracts starts on 10 February. For students (undergraduates, Master's and PhD) presenting their work at the event - poster or oral session - the registration will be free of charge.

Feel free to contact 8th.interporebr@contacto.ufsc.br with any questions.

The recent joint event between the Australian Chapter of InterPore and the International Wettability Symposium, took place in Sydney between 29-31 January 2025. The event brought together delegates from around the world, including the USA, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, fostering knowledge exchange within our Australian community.

They hosted 35 oral presentations plus several posters covering a wide range of topics, such as carbon sequestration, underground hydrogen storage, AI for porous media, multiphase flow, geomechanics, and soil characterisation.

The event also coincided with the Chinese New Year, and which was celebrated with a dinner at one of Sydney’s Chinese gardens. To conclude the event, there was a scenic coastal walk in Sydney.

The event was sponsored by UNSW, and the organisation was led by Peyman Mostaghimi and Jing Yu.

A new Chapter is being formed: The Maghreb InterPore Chapter.

The First International Conference (ICMIC 01) and kick-off meeting of the Chapter has been scheduled and will take place on 14-16 April 2025 in Monastir, Tunisia.

This landmark event brings together leading researchers from the Maghreb, Mediterranean, and international communities to exchange insights and foster collaborations in porous media research.

Please have a look at their flyer.

The Iran InterPore Chapter is organizing a lecture series. The first lecture will be delivered by Prof. Vahid Niasar on 3 March 2025.

Last newsletter's announcement for the German Chapter's search for a new Steering Committee chair regrettably included a typo in the email address. Interested parties should contact Aqeel Chaudhry at aqeel.chaudhry@ifgt.tu-freiberg.de. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Dr. Chiara Recalcati
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Dr. Chiara Recalcati’s diverse research portfolio on fundamental porous media science, her publications, and her successful and already broad international experience, serve as an inspiration to young scientists everywhere. She is rapidly emerging as a reference scientist in the experimental and theoretical characterization of the heterogeneous nature of reactive processes taking place across the surface of minerals in contact with a fluid and driving chemical weathering of natural porous media.

Prof. Peter Kang
Associate Professor & Gibson Chair of Hydrogeology Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
University of Minnesota, USA

Prof. Peter Kang is a leading scientist in geosciences, specializing in coupled processes in porous media. Since earning his Ph.D. from MIT in 2014, he has established himself as a highly regarded expert in flow and reactive transport in porous and fractured systems. As a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, he leads a dynamic research group focused on reactive transport and fractured rock hydrogeology. His work integrates diverse methodologies, including microfluidics, high-performance computing, and fieldwork, to develop a mechanistic understanding of subsurface processes across multiple scales.

The goal of the course is to introduce students to nonlocality, fundamental scale considerations, and upscaling based on a statistical mechanics framework grounded in the physics of multiphase flow in porous media

International Conference in Honor of Rien van Genuchten

A cross on a mountain

Description automatically generatedChallenges and Opportunities in Porous Media Multiphase Flow and Contaminant Transport Research, the International Conference in Honor of Rien van Genuchten will be held 07-09 May 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Networks on Networks (Second Edition)

Role of connectivity in physics of geobiology and geochemistry

Muhammad Sahimi and Allen Hunt

With the increasing recognition of the importance of connectivity in the Critical Zone, the advantages of percolation theory, which generates, e.g., scale dependences of connections, transport, and flow, over soil and hydrologic networks, become clear. It provides a unifying theoretical framework to understand problems ranging from the time frame required for river networks to integrate to a given scale, to the number of plant species found in a given climate. A highlight is the chapter on watershed hydrology.
