Issue #18, 17 September 2024

Content

Dear InterPore colleagues,

A scientific understanding of something a little bit complicated as the influence of variable pumping rates for drinking water production from groundwater on microbial safety aspects is one thing. Yet another thing is explaining it to policy makers, which is particularly challenging when lots of unknowns are in play. In strong contrast with some political perception in the Netherlands lately, science isn’t for free, even though many in academia also use their free time to continue working on their scientific work…

…which can result in a nice publication (InJournals), Chapter meetings (Iran and Spain coming up), the Kimberly-Clark lecturer traveling around, ongoing preparations of InterPore2025, work done within the InterPore community, and already the 61st edition of the Porous Media Tea Time Talk!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter

Invited speaker

In anticipation of InterPore2025, we’re introducing the invited speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Linda Luquot

Linda Luquot
CNRS-Géosciences Montpellier, France

Title: Reactive transport processes in porous rock sample: role of local heterogeneities

Linda Luquot (CNRS researcher at Geosciences Montpellier) has a Ph.D. in Geosciences after training in physics and chemistry. She has developed her research on reactive transport processes in porous and fractured media applied to geoscience topics such as CO2 geological storage, seawater intrusion, geothermic, managed aquifer recharge and karstic networks formation.

This study presents laboratory experiments involving the percolation of reactive fluids through rock samples. The primary objective is to elucidate the role of local heterogeneities in governing reaction rates, the type of reactions occurring, their spatial localization, and the resultant impacts on structural and hydrodynamic properties. Key findings from these experiments reveal that local variations in fluid velocity significantly influence the… continue reading

Must see…. in Albuquerque!

InterPore2025 will be in Albuquerque. This week’s cultural highlight: Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

As the crisp autumn air settles over the desert landscape, Albuquerque transforms into a kaleidoscope of color, drawing thousands from around the world to witness the breathtaking Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Held annually in early October, this iconic event is not only a celebration of hot air ballooning but also a vibrant display of community spirit and cultural pride. The Balloon Fiesta, which first launched in 1972 with just 13 balloons, has grown into the world’s largest ballooning event. This year’s fiesta will see over 600 balloons grace the skies, filling the horizon with a mesmerizing array of colors and patterns over nine days, offering an unforgettable experience that attracts more than 100,000 spectators. One of the main attractions is the “Mass Ascension,” where hundreds of balloons take off simultaneously, creating a stunning visual spectacle. Another crowd favorite is the “Glowdeo,” where balloons are tethered to the ground and illuminated at night, casting a magical glow over the park. Beyond the vibrant displays, the Balloon Fiesta is a testament to Albuquerque’s community spirit and cultural heritage. Local artisans, performers, and food vendors contribute to the festive atmosphere, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Whether you’re a ballooning enthusiast, a cultural aficionado, or simply looking for a unique experience, the Fiesta offers a captivating blend of excitement, beauty, and community. Don’t miss your chance to witness this spectacular celebration of flight and color!

Effects of dynamic capillarity on the shear strength of sandy soils during transient two-phase flow: Insights from non-equilibrium triaxial simulations

Alireza Daman Shokouh, Ehsan Nikooee, Ghassem Habibagahi, S. Majid Hassanizadeh

Image removed.

One of the intricacies of two-phase flow in porous media is dynamic capillarity, whose effects on fluid flow have already been extensively studied. However, its impact on mechanical behavior is still unclear. One might expect that a change in the hydraulic state would alter the mechanical responses intuitively, but the question is whether the magnitude of these potential alterations is large enough to be worth considering in models and calculations. We addressed this question through numerical simulations. In short, the answer is yes. If you’d like to learn more, our latest publication explores this topic in greater depth.
