Issue #11, 24 May 2024
Dear InterPore colleagues,
InterPore2024 has concluded! For those who were there and for those who couldn’t be present, many fond memories can be found through our social media channels (see below). Due to COVID-19, it took some years for InterPore to reach Qingdao, but finally it worked out…and what an event it was! A huge thanks to the local organizing team!
Of course, we would like to know your thoughts so the meeting can be as good or better in Albuquerque in 2025. Please find the link to the survey below.
Meanwhile, the world continues on with producing new papers, the possibility to apply for the Kimberly-Clark lectures, jobs, other events, webinars and elections into prestigious positions. In that respect, many congrats to Prof. Martin Blunt! And, of course, please consider nominees for the upcoming InterPore elections.
To conclude, a correction from the last Newsletter: the eulogy of Professor De Marsily was originally written by Benoit Noetinger and adapted to our Newsletter by Majid Hassanizadeh.
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter

The MDPI Student Poster Award is given in recognition of outstanding student poster presentations at the annual InterPore conference. Each year, the Student Awards and Grants Sub-Committee chaired by Professor Mohaddeseh Mousavi Nezhad, chooses the best two student poster presentations, and the winners receive an honorable mention during the conference and a prize of € 500. The award has been sponsored by MDPI Energies and MDPI Computation.
We are happy to announce this years winners:
Feihu Ke from The University of Hong Kong for the poster entitled “Two-Phase Flow Displacement Morphologies In Cohesive Granular Materials”
Yang Meng from the Eastern Institute of Technology Ningbo, China, for the poster entitled “PoreBoostGAN: AI-Supercharged Swin Trans-former for Unprecedented Detail”
Congratulations to the winners!
The Grant Writing Workshop at InterPore2024, led by Professor Nima Shokri, received excellent feedback for its practical approach to discussing grant writing with students, postdocs, and early career researchers. Organized by the Student Affairs Committee (SAC), the workshop was praised for its interactive style and the use of a recent grant proposal as a real-world example. The thorough preparation for the workshop by the Editor-in-Chief of InterPore Journal clearly paid off, as participants found the direct and detailed presentation helped demystify the grant writing process. By the end of the event, attendees had gained valuable insights into facing the challenges of securing research funding. The workshop’s meaningful impact gave the early career researchers the tools and confidence to write successful grant proposals.
In summary, the Grant Writing Workshop was a standout success. We commend the efforts of everyone involved in organizing this event, as it has provided our early career researchers with the tools to approach and master the art of grant writing confidently. Such opportunities are the cornerstone for nurturing the future generation of porous media scientists, and we are thrilled to have facilitated this critical stepping stone in their journey.

Efficiency and safety of CO2 storage in saline aquifers can be improved by direct viscosifcation at low concentration of engineered molecules. Our engineered molecules have negligible solubility in brine, very low adsorption to the rock and are mildly affected by temperature. X-ray CT imaging of displacement experiments is conducted to quantify the in-situ sc-CO2 saturation spatiotemporally. The imaging data advance the understanding of boundary conditions, brine production, and local residual brine saturation. The combination of mobility control and residual brine saturation reduction from interfacial elasticity improve sweep efficiency significantly and increases the solubility trapping.
