Issue #04, 16 February 2024
Dear InterPore colleagues,
The Dutch ministry of health, including my institute, is under scrutiny for taking insufficient action against unsafe working environments. The news sparked vivid conversations and long apologetic emails from the director and management team with firm action (plans).
The question is even more complex in the international context of InterPore, as (to some extent!) manners and perception are part of the culture, not to mention the geopolitical tensions. InterPore has the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee striving for a safe community where science can be shared and discussed. Let’s work with them to make InterPore2024 and the IP Chapter Meetings a success for everyone! Share in the joy of the award winners, nominate worthy candidates and take an interest in the scientific achievements.
All in the spirit of taking good care of each other,
Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

InterPore2024 will be in Qingdao. Described as a city of “red tiles, green trees, blue sky, and blue sea.” Qingdao has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: Shilaoren Beach
Shilaoren Beach, one of the largest seaside bathing beaches in Qingdao urban area, is located at the southern end of Haier Road in Laoshan District, Qingdao, Shandong Province. It is a comprehensive tourist beach integrating vacation, sightseeing tourism, water sports, and beach activities. The coastline of Shilaoren Beach is approximately 3100 meters long, with a beach width of over 100 meters, covering an area of approximately 280,000 square meters. The sea swimming area covers about 240,000 square meters. It attracts around 3 million visitors annually.
At the easternmost end of Shilaoren Beach, southwest of Shilaoren Village and at the foot of Wushan Mountain, there is a cliff facing the sea on the southern side. About 100 meters from the shore stands a pillar approximately 17 meters high, resembling an old man sitting amidst the azure sea, hence earning the nickname “Shilaoren”.
InterPore2024 Conference grants are available!
We are pleased to announce that InterPore Foundation would once again like to offer a number of conference grants to researchers from academic institutions from countries with low- or middle-income economies, as defined by the World Bank, and to graduate students.
In addition to paying the conference registration fees, the InterPore Foundation will provide up to €500 per recipient to go towards travel costs.
Applicants must have a presentation at InterPore2024 and current InterPore membership.
Interested? Check here for how to apply.
Invited Student Paper Award
For those of you participating in the next InterPore Conference in Qingdao, don’t forget about the Invited Student Paper Award from InterPore Journal. Recipients of this award will be selected from the students who present at the InterPore annual meeting. The awardee will be given the opportunity to submit an invited paper to InterPore Journal.
The minisymposia conveners will nominate students for this award after all presentations have been given. In the end, up to eight students will receive this award, which will be announced at the next Annual Conference. For more information on this award, please see here.
Announcement of InterPore Elections 2024: Nominate or volunteer!
InterPore Elections are coming up, spanning an election period from 1 – 30 November 2024. With this announcement, we wish to inform the Society members about the details of the election procedure.
One President-Elect, four Council members and four members of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC).
Anyone with a current InterPore membership during the voting period.
For the Council candidates at least three of them must be representatives from the industry.
Please find more information on the options to nominate or volunteer in this pdf.
Kimberly-Clark Lectureship
Prof. Ruben Juanes, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2024.
InterPore has received more than 30 applications to host Prof. Juanes. He has two upcoming presentations scheduled, both in-person:
If you wish to get in touch with Prof. Juanes about a potential presentation, please contact Sandra Bartsch.
Chapter News
The Colombia Chapter is organizing the Groundwater Technical Week. The event will be held in Bogota, Colombia from 18 – 20 March 2024.
More info on their website.
The kick-off meeting of the Northeast-Midwest (NEWM) United States InterPore Chapter was held on Monday, 22 January 2024, 1-4 PM EST. The meeting was organized by the chapter’s founding committee and was hosted virtually at the University of Cincinnati. Approximately 40 participants registered and actively participated in this engaging 3-hour event.
The meeting commenced with a warm welcome from Prof. Lilit Yeghiazarian, who provided insights into the history and objectives of InterPore chapters. She also shared the journey leading to the establishment of the NEWM chapter. Following this, an informal introduction allowed participants to… read the full report
The 10th Annual Conference of Mexico Chapter of InterPore will take place in a hybrid format on 7 and 8 March 2024. Please see here for more details.
Prof. Ryan Armstrong
University of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia
Prof. Armstrong has pioneered novel methods for the analysis and interpretation of multiphase flow in porous media, including the first measurements of interfacial curvature and topology, while leading the development of novel machine learning techniques.
Ryan’s research has been principally concerned with the analysis of high-resolution pore-scale images of multiphase flow, as well as the modelling and interpretation of displacement processes in porous media. More recently, he has made significant advances in the application of machine learning methods for image segmentation and analysis. The work has been applied to understand storage and recovery processes, including carbon dioxide storage and – more recently – hydrogen storage and withdrawal.
InterPore and InterPore Foundation congratulate Prof. Armstrong on this honor and wish him continued success.
Prof. Alberto Guadagnini
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Politecnico di Milano, Italy
Prof. Alberto Guadagnini has a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, where he is a Professor of Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics, and Vice Rector for Research of the Politecnico di Milano; he is also an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona, USA.
Alberto is a brilliant scientist who has applied rigorous methods to quantify and understand uncertainty in subsurface flow and transport processes, and which has had a major impact on practical problems in groundwater management and, more generally, in flow in porous media applied to carbon dioxide and hydrogen storage.
In his research, Prof. Guadagnini has repeatedly advanced the frontiers of porous media science through the delineation, development, and application of quantitative, process-based flow and chemical transport models in natural porous geomaterials.
InterPore and InterPore Foundation congratulate Prof. Alberto Guadagnini on this honor and wish him continued success.

InterPore has been a member of the International Science Council since 2020. The ISC is an international organization comprised of more than 245 member societies, organizations, academies, and associations from all fields of science, with the mission “to act as the global voice for science.”
Robert Zimmerman and Adriana Paluszny of Imperial College would like to inform the InterPore community of the publication of their new book, Fluid Flow in Fractured Rocks.
This book is intended for researchers and students who are interested in hydrogeology, hydrology, water resources, structural geology, reservoir engineering, underground waste disposal, or other fields that involve the flow of fluids through fractured rock masses. Classical and established models and data are… read further

Natural textiles, wood, hair, paper, wool, or bio-based walls possess the remarkable ability to store humidity from sweat or the environment through “bound water” absorption within nanopores, constituting up to 30% of their dry mass. The transport and storage mechanisms of this moisture remain poorly understood, with modeling often relying on an assumption of dominant vapor transport with an unknown diffusion coefficient. By isolating diffusion processes and deriving diffusion coefficients through rigorous experimentation our research addresses this knowledge gap, in particular demonstrating the pivotal role of bound water transport within interconnected fiber networks.
