Issue #18, 22 September 2023
Dear InterPore colleagues,
Very special attention to the 50th edition of the Porous Media Tea Time Talk! Of course to the live edition next week, but also to all the preceding 49 editions still available through the PMTTT Youtube Channel. Congratulations to the entire PMTTT team with this impressive accomplishment. A wealth of information online.
There is more online education coming up: Inge Berre’s webinar and the first of its kind InterPore Porous Media course. Good ol’ in-person meetings are coming up as well, including chapter meetings and InterPore2024.
I acknowledge that all these fascinating events do keep you away from doing research yourself. If you did get to it and got it published (or soon in the InterPore Journal), make sure you promote your work through the Newsletter as well!
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

Prof. Juanes is the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2024.
As the winner of this year’s distinguished award, Prof. Ruben Juanes will be giving one of his two lectures at selected institutions. Hosts may select one of two options:
Option A: Fluids, Fingers, Fractures and Fractals: Patterns in Porous Media
Option B: Man-made Earthquakes and the Energy Transition
If your university/institution is interested in hosting Prof. Juanes, please download and fill out the application form and send it to Sandra Bartsch.
Prof. Juanes and InterPore look forward to hearing from you!
Call for nominations for the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2025: the InterPore Foundation is now accepting nominations for this prestigious award for 2025. For more information on the nomination procedure, visit our website.
Cooperation opportunities with EAGE
InterPore and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) are honored to collaborate as Associated Societies in the promotion and development of porous media-related topics in the geoscience and engineering fields. In this regard, the members of both organizations can benefit from knowledge exchange and networking opportunities by attending each other’s conferences, workshops and education offerings, as well as by accessing an extended group of technical experts from industry and academia through the EAGE Distinguished Lecturer Program and InterPore Academy Webinar Series. Additional cooperation opportunities are in progress, so stay tuned to hear more about them!
You may be familiar with the journal roles of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) and Reviewers, and with what each does, but are you familiar with the other roles that InterPore Journal has?
To start, we have ten Editors, who are experts in various porous media topics, and act as advisors to the EIC and as ambassadors. As an advisor, they identify & suggest new topics for special or themed issues and commission new articles. As an ambassador, they represent the Journal at various events and spread the word amongst their colleagues. They are also responsible for managing the review process alongside the EIC.
The four members of our Committee on Publication Ethics are there to advise all others on matters with an ethical background. This includes allegations of misconduct and questions or complaints regarding the processes this journal follows.
Our Editorial Board is composed of 34 experts within various porous media fields, and whom the EIC and Board of Editors rely upon as scientific advisors in their focus area. They assist with the vital role of peer review, and act as ambassadors by promoting the Journal amongst their networks and colleagues.
Finally, we have the Managing Editor who is basically the glue holding everything together. This includes managing the day-to-day administrative activities, keeping the website up to date, assisting with problems, and overseeing the entire production process up until and beyond publication of each issue.
Chapter News
Abstract submission deadline has been extended to 30 September
The West Africa InterPore Chapter will hold its annual meeting & symposium on 27-28 October 2023.
For the first edition of its annual meeting, WAIC invites researchers and industry professionals to submit abstracts from now until 30 September. This symposium aims to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations among researchers, engineers, and industry stakeholders to address the pressing challenges associated with mining activities in Africa, particularly the critical issue of mining waste management.
Visit the West Africa InterPore Chapter Meeting & Symposium page to learn more and submit your abstract.
The 16th edition of JEMP (Journées d’Etudes des Milieux Poreux) – the InterPore France Chapter conference on porous media – will be held at IFP Energie nouvelles, Rueil-Malmaison (near Paris) from 17 to 19 October 2023.
The discussions, mostly interdisciplinary, involve fundamental topics such as applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and process engineering. The scientific research carried out in these domains is relevant in several major areas related to environmental and societal needs: energy storage, pollution abatement, renewable energies, agri-food and health.
The deadline to take advantage of Early Bird rates and apply for the Thesis Award is 15 September.
