Issue #20, 14 October 2022
Dear InterPore colleagues,
The COVID pandemic remains a difficult-to-predict beast, with current numbers in the Netherlands going up again. I was discussing that difficulty with colleagues who use network theories to model pandemics. Those heterogeneous networks (albeit mostly directed graphs) resemble our pore network models. While we simply upscale to an REV level to allow some volume averaging and ease up on making predictions, upscaling social networks is something else. Explain to a party organizer that his party is save on average.
Interdisciplinary discussions are fostered by the ISC. Our own business, porous media, is being discussed in various InterPore chapter meetings, in the KC Lecturer talk by Adrian Bejan and the short course by Rainer Helmig. Please notice that the abstract submission for InterPore2023 has opened.
Final remarks: The InterPore members can expect an email with the invitation to vote in the InterPore elections. Meanwhile, you can put forward nominees for one of the InterPore awards.
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter

Professor Shervin Bagheri
KTH, Stockholm, Sweden
Title: Stability and functionality of immobilised liquid-liquid interfaces in periodic structured media
Professor Shervin Bagheri graduated in Fluid Mechanics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm in 2010. In 2017, he was appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellow and received the Future Research Leader award by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). Since 2020, he has been a member of the Young Academy of Sweden. Bagheri’s research focuses on the interaction between flowing fluids and complex materials across different length and time scales, ranging from molecular aspects of triple-phase contact lines to turbulent flows of porous media.
In this talk, I will discuss how liquid-liquid interfaces can be stably locked into periodic structured porous substrates and used for controlling the transfer of momentum, heat and mass with an external flow. We will discuss their potential as flow-continuous heterogeneous catalysis and for other applications that require optimizing mass transfer across interfaces, such as CO2 capture.
InterPore2023 is a great place to meet old and new colleagues. Help us find these new colleagues by sharing InterPore2023 within your network. One possibility is adding a PowerPoint slide available here (5 MB) to your lectures and talks or share it via email.
InterPore2023 will take place in Edinburgh. Edinburgh has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Edinburgh is home to the Royal Yacht Britannia. The three-mast, 412-foot-long yacht was the British Monarchy’s vessel from 1953, when she was launched by Queen Elizabeth II, until her decommission in 1997. During her 43-year career, she conveyed the Queen and other members of the Royal family on more than 900 visits and travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world. It is said that Her Majesty shed a tear at the decommissioning ceremony that was attended by most of the senior members of the Royal Family.
Britannia is now a visitor attraction moored in the historic port of Leith in Edinburgh, explored by more than 300,000 people every year. The visit across her five decks will take you past the crewmen quarters and the Royal Apartments, while the numerous rare items and photographs on display will give you an exclusive look into the Royal family and Royal Yachtsmen (Yotties) lives when at sea. A must on your to-do list when you come visit Edinburgh next year.

2nd Israel Chapter meeting report
The second meeting of the Israel chapter of the InterPore was held at the Weizmann Institute of Science on September 18; about fifty researchers and academicians from throughout the nation attended. During the day, students gave lectures on a vast array of porous media-related research from various viewpoints. In addition, there was an interesting poster session where new research works were presented. The conference encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing between researchers and students, and we look forward to sharing next year’s meeting.
The organization of the chapter was led by the student representative of the Israel Chapter, Dror Ettlinger from the Weizmann Institute of Science, and her committee members Yanjing Wei from Tel Aviv University, Mario del Mastro from the Technion, Arnold Bacharach from the Technion, and Sayan Sen from Ben Gurion University. We also thank Prof. Brian Berkowitz and the Weizmann institute for financing the conference.
Short Course by Rainer Helmig

Don’t miss our upcoming short course “Porous Media Free Flow Coupling” with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Helmig. The course will take place on Mondays from November 14 – December 12 in person at the University of Stuttgart and online. Please visit our website for more details and registration.
The InterPore Academy for Porous Media is a new unit to promote educational activities, mainly to serve younger researchers, with a range of short courses, webinars, and workshops. See the website for further information.
Research Gaps to Achieve SDGs by 2030
International Science Council’s Publication on Research Gaps to Achieve SDGs by 2030
We would like to draw your attention to the following publication by the ISC.
This publication looks at identifying research topics of particular importance to achieve the SDGs set by the United Nations by 2030. The topics covered are:
The report also explores how to successfully reform science systems by changing practice, boosting research capacity (focusing on middle and low-income countries) and strengthening trust in science. Within InterPore we have long been contributing to capacity building through our national chapters.
Share your thoughts on the research gaps identified by the ISC and where your works fit in this picture.
In ISC news items we propose topics for group discussions with your research team, either during a coffee break or in a dedicated session. InterPore is a member of ISC.
Call for Award Nominations
Hopefully your colleagues receive this email because they can nominate you for one of the InterPore Awards! (hint: Help them sign up for the Newsletter). Or one of your colleagues really deserves recognition. In that case, please inform us, as InterPore recognizes young and senior scientists for their contributions in the field of porous media research as a sign of appreciation and as a stimulus for more excellent work.
Please find more information about the InterPore Awards in this flyer.
Deadline: 1 November
Promote your Publication
InterPore Members, do you want to promote your publication to the community? If so, please submit your highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).
The highlight should be short (500 characters) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
If you have a job opening in your institute and would like to promote it internationally, please send the description and weblink or PDF to newsletter@interpore.org, and we’ll be happy to add it to the list.
