Dear InterPore friends,
Next week at Utrecht University, our third year bachelor course “Introduction Porous Media” starts. I
went through my house, making 3-5 second movie clips of various porous materials. Sponges, clothes,
plant roots, diapers, batteries, coffee pads… it made my wife wonder: “what is not porous?”
Exactly right! (we thought of glass and an umbrella.)
Compiling those movie clips into my
“pre-recorded” lecture was fun yet time-consuming, and I hope the students will appreciate porous
materials a little bit more after seeing the lecture.
Of course, pre-recording a lecture
reminded me of InterPore2021 (a few days left before the abstract deadline!). I am already
looking forward to seeing all the pre-recorded talks. And with lessons learned from last year, I am
confident that InterPore2021 will be even better in respect to facilitating scientific discussions
as well as offering a platform for social events.
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter

There’s very little time left to submit an abstract for InterPore2021!
InterPore2021 Online will feature live oral presentations and poster sessions. Oral
presenters will give 10 minute presentations with 5 minutes for Q&A during live sessions. During
poster sessions, each presenter will have a dedicated video conference room for discussing their
posters. In addition, recorded content (pre-recorded presentations, recorded
lecturers, etc., but also posters) will be accessible 24/7.

InterPore2021 – Don’t miss a
moment!
The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) organizes a series of events targeted at the community of early
career researchers. Here we highlight their Career Development Event that will also take place at
InterPore2021. Many students struggle with the decision of which career path to follow after the
PhD. Should I pursue an academic career or search for possibilities in industry or governmental
agencies? What are the pros (and cons) of each career path? What does the life-after-PhD feel like?
To help shed light onto these big questions, the SAC will invite a set of established professionals
to share their personal views and experiences. In this session, we will not hear about their latest
research results but instead about their different professional pathways and the important choices
they had to make along the way.
InterPore Kimberly-Clark
Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Veerle Cnudde has just completed her 15th lecture as the 2020 InterPore
Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer on Porous Media Science & Technology! She gave her lecture
entitled “Unravelling pore-scale processes in geomaterials” at the InterPore German National Chapter
meeting held 1-2 February 2021. In addition to the virtual lecture she gave this earlier this week,
she has given lectures at:
Professor Cnudde’s lecture at Heriot-Watt University can be viewed on our YouTube channel.
We thank Professor Cnudde for her dedication and commitment to promoting InterPore and porous media
research throughout an interesting and challenging time to be awarded a lectureship. We also wish to
acknowledge Kimberly-Clark with our gratitude for their support.
It is still possible to apply for the KC Distinguished Lecturer 2021!
Prof. Muhammad Sahimi
University
of Southern California, USA
The title of the lecture is: Porous Media, Small and Large: From Atomistic Modeling of
Nano-porous Membranes to Modeling of Flow and Transport in Geological Formations.
An abstract of the talk and a short biography of Prof. Sahimi can be found on our website.
Apply now to request to host the 2021 InterPore Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer at your
institute!
Given the current situation with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof. Sahimi will also be
able to bring the lecture to your institute online, including Q&A and unfolding discussions.

information.
The InterPore Academy for Porous Media is a new unit to promote educational activities, mainly to
serve younger researchers, with a range of short courses, webinars, and workshops. See the website for further
information.
We are happy to invite you to our next Porous Media Tea Time Talks (#PorousMediaTTT) session
at 9 February at 10:30 am CEST local
time on our YouTube
Channel.
The goal of the Porous Media TTT is to act as a complimentary platform to the already very successful
Geoscience and Geoenergy
webinars with the focus placed on young professionals.
We are very much looking forward to seeing you online!
