New plenary speaker announced

We are thrilled to confirm that Fred Phillips will be the plenary speaker at the Special Session on Water at InterPore2025! Fred will present his talk entitled “Groundwater Under Changing Climate: How Far Can the Rubber Band Stretch?” This presentation promises to offer valuable insights into the complexities of groundwater systems in the context of climate change. Following Fred’s lecture, a discussion on Fred’s thought-provoking presentation, as well as other unconventional water usage issues, will be led by Thushara Gunda of Sandia National Laboratories. This will be a unique and engaging opportunity to explore some of the most pressing challenges in water science today!

Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecture in Hasselt

On December 12, 2024, Prof. Ruben Juanes gave the lecture “Fluids, Fingers, Fractures and Fractals: Patterns in Porous Media” at the Hasselt University (Belgium). The lecture, given in a very understandable way, was extremely interesting, scientifically entertaining and stimulated extensive discussions. It helped the audience, where young scientists and students were well represented, to understand better the fluid flow in a porous medium at both pore and Darcy scales, and gave many new research ideas. The Computational Mathematics group and UHasselt is grateful to Prof. Juanes for the visit and the wonderful lecture, and to the International Society of Porous Media and Kimberly-Clark, for making all this possible.

Prof. Ruben Juanes, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, the Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer of 2024, is finishing off his lecture year! His next scheduled presentations will be at the University of Stuttgart, Germany on January 22nd, and Stanford University, USA on January 30th. Auto-weighted Bayesian Physics-Informed Neural Networks and robust estimations for multitask inverse problems in pore-scale imaging of dissolution

This work focuses on new methods for the AI multitask weighting of inverse problems in dissolution process at the pore scale. The method presented can carry out, from microtomography observations, the porosity and concentration fields (observable or latent) in pore-scale reactive flows with evolving fluid-solid interface, together with characteristic numbers (Damköhler, molecular diffusion, chemical coefficients and tortuosity index). The multitask formulation of such inverse problems is based on an automatic weighting of Bayesian Physics-Informed Neural Networks (BPINNs) and involves naturally uncertainty quantification. The inverse problems of dissolution 1D+Time and 2D+Time at the pore scale are provided on synthetic microCT samples.

Using python libraries and k-Nearest neighbors algorithms to delineate syn-sedimentary faults in sedimentary porous media

This paper introduces a methodology based on Python libraries and machine learning k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithms to create an interactive 3D HTML model that combines 2D grain-size KNN-prediction vertical sections from which syn-sedimentary faults and other features in sedimentary porous media can be delineated. The grain-size physical parameter is associated to lithological classes. Grain-size data comes from a database of 433 boreholes in the Llobregat River Delta in NE Spain. This methodology is suitable to reduce the unmeasurable uncertainty associated to the qualitative geological data used in complex numerical tools aimed at modelling different geological resources or Earth phenomena.
