Issue #22, 8 November 2024
Dear InterPore colleagues,
It is tempting to write about the outcome of the US elections, and considering many human-caused devastating events around the globe (including Ukraine, the Middle-East, Myanmar, Sudan), but I’ll restrict myself to pointing out the UNESCO World Science Day for Peace and Development 2024.
We can carry a heavy burden when we carry it together! One example is the InterPore Foundation funding conference grants for those who can’t afford the trip. Please find out more below.
And we also have our own elections still open to 30 November! Have you already voted?
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

Plenary speaker
In anticipation of InterPore2025, we’re introducing the plenary speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Sylvie Lorente
Sylvie Lorente
Villanova University, USA
Title: Flow architectures in porous media, designing for efficiency
Sylvie Lorente is the William M. Brown ’84, ’87 Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering at Villanova University, PA, USA, since June 2024. Sylvie has a passion for flow architectures, and works on thermal design, energy storage, vascularized structures, porous media, biological flow networks, urban design and organizations. Flow systems can evolve toward greater efficiency by adapting… [continue]
Minisymposia
The annual InterPore conference includes 26 minisymposia. In the next Bulletins, we will introduce three at the time. Find out who the organizers of the minisymposia and who the Solicited Speakers are through the “More information” links.
Sustainable use of soil and water resources is crucial to preserve healthy terrestrial ecosystems and maintaining food security. This minisymposium aims to bring together contributions on the physics, chemistry and biology of porous media with emphasis on applications to the ecohydrology and biogeochemistry of ecosystems. [More info]
Multiphase flow in porous media is significant to many applications. The purpose of this minisymposium is to provide forum to share and explore recent insights into multiphase displacement physics through experiments, modelling and theory development. [More info]
Geologic carbon storage is a linchpin in the suite of technologies. This mini-symposium is inspired by the contributions of Professor Sally Benson – researcher, educator, mentor, advisor to the U.S. President, and recipient of the InterPore Society Honorary Lifetime Membership Award in 2024. We invite submissions that highlight multiscale and/or multimodal investigations into multiphase flows in geologic systems, particularly for energy-forward applications. [More info]
Conference Grants for InterPore2025
We are pleased to announce that InterPore Foundation for Porous Media Science and Technology (InterPore Foundation) would once again like to offer a number of conference grants to researchers from academic institutions from countries with low- or middle-income economies, as defined by the World Bank, and to graduate students.
Applicants must have a presentation at the InterPore2025 conference and current InterPore membership. The grants will be awarded based on applicants’ academic attainment and quality of their research abstracts.
For more information about the application process, please visit the webpage.
Please send the full application package to Sandra Bartsch.
New Gold Sponsor
We are thrilled to announce Shell as a Gold Sponsor for InterPore2025! Shell’s continued support underscores a shared commitment to advancing porous media research and fostering innovation in energy, sustainability, and technology. We extend our deepest thanks to Shell for their invaluable support!
Must see…. in Albuquerque!
InterPore2025 will be in Albuquerque. This week’s cultural highlight: Tent Rocks: An Enigmatic Wonder
Tent Rocks (Kasha-Katuwe) is a breathtaking natural wonder to explore, hidden in the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico. This unique geological marvel, with its towering rock formations and stunning landscapes, offers an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
The Tent Rocks are renowned for their striking conical formations, resembling enormous tents scattered across the desert. The formations are not only a natural landmark but also a source of inspiration and spirituality to the Pueblo peoples, who have inhabited the surrounding areas. At Tent Rocks, keep an eye out for colorful wildflowers, pinyon pines, and various bird species that call this area home.
Located about 53 miles north of Albuquerque, the Tent Rocks National Monument offers visitors a variety of experiences. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a nature lover, or just seeking a scenic getaway, Tent Rocks has something special for everyone.
