Issue #21, 25 October 2024
Dear InterPore colleagues,
InterPore2025 is starting to shape up. In fact, you can start shaping up InterPore2025 by submitting abstracts! I must admit that I find it sometimes a little bit challenging to foresee what will be the latest achievement that I will want to share six months from now! I know that (my) scientific endeavors don’t always go quite as fast as I had hoped, so I shouldn’t set my expectations too high with these abstracts. On the other hand, submitting an abstract on already published work feels like moving backwards… (which is not the case!). I am very familiar with my own work, but most of you aren’t. And vice versa. There is so much being published, yet the excitement comes with the latest work…
Anyway, I’ll think about it. Meanwhile, elections coming up! Chapter meetings and very important: Do make a nomination for an InterPore Award!
All the best,
Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

Submission of proposals for Conference Courses at InterPore2025 is now open! Courses will be organized as satellite events of the InterPore Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico on the following dates:
Standard duration of a given course will be half a day (3-hour lecture). Proposals for non-standard duration, if well justified, will be considered. Main criteria for selection of proposals include track record of the proposers as well as the opportunity to ensure diversity to a full extent across the set of courses.

Invited speaker
In anticipation of InterPore2025, we’re introducing the invited speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Luis Cueto-Felgueroso (Technical University of Madrid, Spain)
Title: Phase-field modeling for multiphase flow and geomechanical processes
Luis Cueto-Felgueroso is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering: Hydraulics, Energy and Environment at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain. His research focuses on developing mathematical models and numerical simulation techniques for multiphase flow and geomechanics, with applications in subsurface energy resources and environmental research.
Phase-field models have proven to be effective simulation tools for describing interfacial processes at computationally feasible scales. Recent applications of these models include simulating the nucleation and propagation of hydraulic fractures in geological formations, as well as the behavior of fluid-fluid interfaces during flow through permeable media. The phase-field approach seeks to upscale interface dynamics by … (continue reading)
InterPore2025 will be in Albuquerque. This week’s cultural highlight: ”Watermelon” Sandia Mountain.
Sandia Mountain is often referred to as “Watermelon Mountain” because of its distinct reddish color at sunset due to potassium-feldspar crystals embedded within the Sandia granite, which resembles the color of a watermelon. When viewed from the west, you can see dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain, offering a striking contrast to the lush foothills. The view includes expansive vistas of the Rio Grande Valley and the city of Albuquerque, particularly stunning during sunrise or sunset when the mountains are illuminated with vibrant colors. The landscape features piñon and juniper trees, creating a beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities and photography. The name also reflects local cultural influences and the vibrant landscape in the area. As part of the Sandia Mountain Wilderness, this area offers activities like hiking, mountain biking, and skiing in the winter. The Sandia Peak Tramway provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Please visit Albuquerque for exploring the Sandia Mountain!!!

EPoMM Workshop
Join us at our free online interactive and participatory workshop on Thursday, 5 December, 10 am – 1 pm on Zoom as we bring together research communities that work across different length scales who have not traditionally interacted through existing fora to generate new ideas about the Interface between Academia & Industry in Porous Materials.
The EPSRC-funded Engineering Porous Materials at Multiple Scales (EPoMM) network builds on the work of GWPore and aims to foster multiscale porosity (nm to mm), applications-led collaboration of scientists and engineers spanning the entire engineering and physical sciences portfolio.
Audience
We particularly welcome a broad range of participants from Chemistry, Physics, Materials, and Engineering who are interested porous materials across a range of scales/dimensions, and form academia or industry.
The workshop objectives are to:

Estimating specific air-water interfacial area (SAWIA) is essential for modeling transport and retention of surface-active solutes (such as per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)) as well as microorganisms in the vadose zone, developing removal techniques for microplastics and predicting mechanical strength of unsaturated soils.
A novel methodology, the pore network-informed multigene genetic programming, is employed to obtain a pedotransfer function for predicting SAWIA in sandy soils, where pore network simulations of soil-water retention data from six sandy soils, with varying porosities and median grain sizes, are used to feed a machine learning algorithm, thereby, developing different formulae predicting SAWIA.

It is generally believed that earthquakes occur when faults weaken with increasing slip rates. It has been hypothesized that the weakening phenomenon during fault slip may be activated by thermal pressurization of pores’ fluid and flash heating. Flash heating was incorporated into the DEM simulations so as to study the variations of the local friction coefficients between the particles, as well the evolution of the frictional strength, induced by slip-rate weakening. It is shown that at relatively high velocities the effect of frictional weakening on the frictional strength of the medium is nontrivial. As strain increases, the … (full read)
