Jan Martin Nordbotten
Nominee
Professor Nordbotten is well-recognized as one of the leading experts in mathematical modelling and numerical simulation in connection with porous media applications. He earned his degree from the University of Bergen at 21 years old, becoming the youngest ever to obtain a Doctorate degree in Norway. He later became a Full Professor in Applied Mathematics at the age of 27. He has an extensive record of outreach and service all over the world and has made substantial contributions on relevant fields connected to porous media research.
He is a mathematician with a strong interest for interdisciplinary collaborations. As early as during his PhD, he worked simultaneously on numerical analysis, while collaborating with environmental engineers on issues related to CO2 storage. Since then, he has established interdisciplinary collaborations in biology (theoretical evolution), ecology (water-plant dynamics), geosciences (multiphase subsurface flows, deformation), biomedicine (image processing, fluid dynamics) and computer science (image rendering). Nordbotten has co-authored papers with over 130 researchers, and was the primary author on the first text-book on modelling and simulation of CO2 storage. He has received several prizes, most recently the 2025 Interpore Medal for Porous Media Research.
