InterPore 2018: Abstract submission deadline is Dec 15, 2017

The deadline for submission of abstracts to InterPore2018 is Friday, December 15

If you have never been to an InterPore meeting, you don’t know what you are missing!

InterPore2018 in New Orleans, 14-17 May 2018 is your chance to attend a different kind of conference!

You will be able to network with the most active porous media researchers around the world from academia, research institutions, and industry.

Here is what InterPore2018 has to offer:

At an InterPore conference, you will not know the majority of participants (not even their names) because they work in subject areas you have never thought would be relevant to you. They do research on diapers, frying of potatoes, marinating chicken legs, blood flow, construction materials, paper, catalyst pellets, etc. Yet, their research will be directly relevant to you; you will find a lot of commonalities in processes, measurement methods, visualization techniques, imaging methods, and numerical methods.

Minisymposia and Poster Sessions

There are 100 sessions (called minisymposia) planned at InterPore2018. Some examples of minisymposia subjects are:

  • Drying of porous media from pore to macro scale
  • Front & interface dynamics and upscaling transport properties in porous media
  • Visualizing and understanding multiphase flow through microfluidic and micromodel devices
  • Transport in nanoporous materials. Theory and molecular dynamics simulations
  • Soft porous materials
  • Fundamentals and applications of foam in permeable media
  • Water movement in porous media under microgravity
  • Flow, transport and mechanical properties of granular porous media: from powders to soil
  • Use of Packed Beds in Chemical Manufacturing – Theory, experiments, models and design innovations
  • Thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical energy storage
  • Porous media flow in biological systems

We have invited many distinguished scientists to make poster presentations that will make poster sessions exciting and provide opportunities for networking and one-to-one interactions with your fellow scientists.

Plenary Speakers

At InterPore2018, we will have the following four plenary speakers:

Uwe Beusche, W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc. “Comparison of liquid particle filtration performance to porous media characterization”
Jens Birkholzer, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, “Cross-Cutting Subsurface Challenges: Insights from Dedicated Subsurface Energy Field Observatories”
Sarah Codd, Mechanical Engineering, Montana State University, “Magnetic Resonance Studies of Transport in Porous Media”
Chunshan Song, Chemical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University “Novel Nano-porous Materials for Energy and Environmental Applications”

Gala Dinner

The gala dinner will be held at Mardi Gras World, one of the large warehouses where floats from New Orleans’ Mardi Gras parades are designed, built and stored. Attendees will get to experience the behind-the-scenes preparations for the Mardi Gras season and observe the legendary floats up close. The gala dinner will be held in a relaxed setting on the banks of the Mississippi River, with plenty of Louisiana food, drinks, and music to celebrate InterPore’s Jubilee year.

Jubilee Celebration

On the opening day, we will be celebrating our Jubilee. We have planned many events. The Jubilee speaker is:
Al Sacco Jr., Dean of the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, Texas Tech University, former astronaut, Fellow of International Academy of Astronautics and a material scientist.

Conference Grants and Student Travel Awards

InterPore Foundation for Porous Media Science and Technology (InterPore Foundation) is providing a limited number of conference grants for participants from academic institutions from countries with lower- or middle-income economies, as defined by the World Bank. The conference grants are in the form of a conference registration fee waiver. Also, travel awards are made available to help some students gain the experience and exposure that comes from attending and presenting at InterPore conferences. The travel awards are intended to help students defray some of the costs of their attendance. See the recent Newsletter for details.

New Orleans

New Orleans is one of the world’s most fascinating cities – it’s home to a truly unique melting pot of culture, food and music.
