Wet and Dry Cup Test With Hygroscopic Materials: What Do We Really Measure?

Yuliang Zou, Elea Moss, Laurent Brochard, & Philippe Coussot

The permeability to vapor is a critical characteristic for clothes or construction materials as it governs the way the material “breathes” or regulates ambient humidity. The standard test for measuring this permeability to vapor is the wet or dry cup test. In this paper we revisit the physical meaning of this measurement. We show that for hygroscopic biobased materials one must take into account the bound water transport by diffusion in the fiber network to properly analyze the test.
