Dear InterPore colleagues, In the Netherlands, we just went through a record stretch of 39 days without rain! Perhaps not directly related to climate change, but the trend of frequent and increasingly lengthy periods of droughts is. Fortunately, it has started raining, and that is the call for Dutch news to broadcast some porous media science: The infiltration rate of dry soil is lower than that of moist soil (potentially causing flash floods) and not resolving the drought as effectively as you might think. Frequent precipitation is optimal. Mainly at night when I am asleep, would be my preference… We’ve got a whole range of items this week: Is our annual InterPore meeting becoming too large, and should we add childcare services? We have a nice series of symposia, workshops and conferences lined up, of which some are in the context of national chapters. And more updates on the InterPore Journal. I wish you all a sunny day with an occasional shower! Matthijs de Winter
InterPore2023 feedback
Dear friends, I hope you have had a chance to read the post-conference survey report. There is one issue that I would like to comment on. A few of you mentioned that InterPore meetings are getting too large with too many presentations. Indeed, the InterPore meeting is growing. However, we are not sure this is bad and/or if we can do anything about it. InterPore is a society that welcomes anyone who is active in porous media science and engineering. The annual meeting is a time and place where our members come together. We cannot possibly exclude anyone who wishes to participate in the annual meeting. Many of the participants wish to give presentations. Unfortunately, many prefer to give an oral presentation, which is perceived as better or more prestigious than a poster presentation. Personally, I believe this is not true, as poster presenters also receive very valuable feedback, as there is more time for discussion and those who are truly interested in their research visit their posters. Nevertheless, we need to accommodate the demand for oral presentations. This means quite a few parallel sessions and relatively short oral presentations. So, I hope that our members appreciate the dilemma. We welcome any feedback/comment in this regard. Feel free to write directly to me or send an opinion piece to newsletter@interpore.org, to be published in an upcoming Newsletter. S. Majid Hassanizadeh
Call for ReviewersAs you may know, the InterPore Journal will be soon open for the submission of papers. We are seeking motivated members and non-members of the Society who are interested in acting as reviewers for submitted papers. The Reviewer role is vital in scholarly publishing: as a reviewer you not only help validate the work which may be published, you also help improve the quality of the published research for all! Participating in the review process is also an excellent way to gain experience in the publishing process, stay abreast of latest developments in your subject area (before anyone else), and improve the quality of your own published work. The Board of Editors will be more than happy to provide you with an official certificate or letter confirming your role as a reviewer for this journal. To register as a reviewer, visit our website. When registering, please do not forget to check the last box for registering as a Reviewer and to add in your reviewing interests. Board of Editors is now completeWe are happy to announce that our Board of Editors for the new InterPore Journal is now complete! Prof. Dr. Noushine Shahidzadeh from the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands has accepted the invitation to join the Board and support us in the launch of our new Society Journal. Each member of this Board is considered a leader in their field, and we are incredibly lucky to have their support and expertise! With Prof. Dr. Shahidzadeh’s background in wetting phenomena, crystallization, complex fluid and general porous media science and technology, she will be a welcome addition to our Board of Editors. For more information on the members of this Board, please visit our website. Laura Lenz
Call for Research SpotlightsInterested in promoting your organization’s latest and greatest research? Consider submitting a Research Spotlight to InterPore. This series is based on short scientific texts with illustrations that give an idea on current projects or group contributions in various fields of porous media research. This opportunity is open to all Institutional Members of InterPore. If you would like to contribute a Research Spotlight, please contact Margaret Dieter.
InterPore Conferences Childcare SurveyInterPore conferences are a vital opportunity for academic and industry researchers. Even with new technological advances allowing for remote communication, face-to-face networking and interaction still play a very important role in the success of attending a conference. One of the barriers our participants may face when deciding whether they are able to attend an event, relates to childcare. InterPore is dedicated to better accommodate families, and mothers in particular, who may face the difficulty of reconciling the demands of both career and family. For this purpose, we have created a quick survey, to determine whether offering a childcare option during our conferences is a viable and necessary measure. This survey is of special interest to all parents who wish for more family-friendly conferences. To access the survey, click here.
Survey participation: Thank you! Thanks to everyone who shared their input via our Strategic Planning Survey. The Strategic Planning Committee is now reviewing your feedback and will be spending the next few months drafting a plan to help guide us in the upcoming years. Stay tuned for more details.
National Chapter NewsChina InterPore ChapterThe 6th International Conference on Digital Core Analysis & the 2023 China InterPore Conference on Porous Media will take place in Qingdao, Shandong, China next week from 5-7 July 2023. The purpose of this workshop is to communicate the latest progress and achievements on fluid flow in porous media research. See more details here. Germany InterPore ChapterThe next meeting of the German Chapter of InterPore will take place at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and will be organized at the Mathematical Institute for Machine Learning and Data Science (MIDS) by the Chair of Geomatics and Geomathematics. The conference provides a national forum for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration of experts from numerous German research institutions, universities, and industry. The topics of the conference therefore deal with all issues of porous media research, from experiment to theory and from science to industrial application. Abstract submission is now open through 16 July. Registration will open on 2 July. See here for more information. France InterPore ChapterThe 16th edition of JEMP (Journées d’Etudes des Milieux Poreux) – the France InterPore Chapter conference on porous media – will be held at IFP Energie nouvelles, Rueil-Malmaison (near Paris) from 17 to 19 October 2023. The discussions, mostly interdisciplinary, involve fundamental topics such as applied mathematics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and process engineering. The scientific research carried out in these domains is relevant in several major areas related to environmental and societal needs: energy storage, pollution abatement, renewable energies, agri-food and health. The deadline to submit abstracts has been extended to 21 July. Click here for more details.
Workshop on Mathematical Methods in Process Engineering5-6 October 2023, Kaiserslautern, Germany The workshop offers a unique opportunity to meet with leading scientists in the field of process engineering in a small group and to gain an overview of new developments. Our concern is to provide companies with impulses from new scientific trends as well as to reflect the needs of industry against the background of current research. The workshop is intended in particular to link science with industrial practice. For more information, please visit our website.
Promote your PublicationInterPore Members, do you want to promote your publication to the community? If so, please submit your highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online). The highlight should be short (500 characters) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
