Dear InterPore colleagues, I hear a lot of people wrapping up before the summer break (sorry, “southern hemospherers”), but nothing like that for InterPore! How about launching our own scientific journal! See below. There are workshops and events coming up. Scientific literature to catch up on, and we look back and forth at InterPore2023 and InterPore2024. I also like to point to Brian Wood’s obituary of the late prof. Steve Whitaker. It is truly inspirational to read. In line with the obituary, I can recommend the Time Capsule recording as well. All the best, Matthijs de Winter
In Memoriam: Stephen WhitakerIt is with great sadness that we report the recent passing of Steve Whitaker. In 2014, Steve received the InterPore Honorary Lifetime Membership Award which is reserved for world renowned researchers in the porous media community. He was also honored by being among those who were asked to be the subject of an InterPore Time Capsule which he was interviewed to reflect upon his many years as a researcher. Brian Wood wrote a full obituary, which you can find here.
Coming Soon – The InterPore JournalHopefully you all have by now heard the exciting news that InterPore will be starting its very own journal. As previously mentioned, this journal will be an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal, entirely published and owned by InterPore. We are planning on a wide range of articles, which include but are not limited to the following: Original Research Papers, Technical Notes, Review Articles, Open Datasets and Source Codes, Letters to the Editor, Commentaries, Short Communications, and Opinion Pieces. Both members of InterPore as well as non-members are welcome to submit, and we hope to receive your submissions soon. An official Call for Papers will also soon follow! You can find out more information on this journal here via the website.
There is of course still plenty of information to add to this website, but you can already check out the Board of Editors as well as the Committee on Publication Ethics Board and more. We plan to start receiving submissions in July! In the meantime, get those papers ready! We would love to receive your contributions linked to a porous media application. Submitted research may include, but is not limited to, physical and numerical modelling, imaging techniques and analysis, theory development, big data analysis, characterization, and/or material design. Elasticity of Confined Simple Fluids from an Extended Peng-Robinson Equation of StateSantiago A. Flores Roman, Gabriel D. Barbosa, and Gennady Y. Go
Thermodynamic properties of fluids in nanopores are altered by confinement, and equations of state (EOS) for bulk fluids are unable to predict them. We utilized a recent EOS based on the Peng-Robinson EOS, which takes into account the effects of confinement, to derive an analytical expression for the bulk modulus of the fluid. We calculated the modulus of liquid argon confined in spherical nanopores of various sizes, and verified our predictions with the Monte Carlo molecular simulations. Our result is a step toward developing an equation of state for confined fluids, which can be used for predictions of elasticity. Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2023, 62, 22, 8972–8980 Pore-scale study of calcite dissolution during CO2-saturated brine injection for sequestration in carbonate aquifersQiuheng Xie, Wendong Wang, Yuliang Su, Han Wang, Zhouyuan Zhang, Wubin Yan
Calcite reacts with CO2-saturated brine to form a divalent ion, which would have a great impact on mineral trapping. To further investigate the mechanism of calcite dissolution, the pore-scale reactive dynamics model based on lattice Boltzmann method was established. The results indicate that the effect of injection rate on dissolution reaction may decrease when ambient temperature is higher. Furthermore, the change in normalized permeability of porous media and dissolved calcite node under different temperature and injection rate is also elaborated. The outcomes in this contribution provide a theoretical guideline to potential estimation of CO2 sequestration and optimization of aimed sites.
