Dear InterPore colleagues, Reactive, colloidal transport through a heterogeneous pore structure with turbulent flow… sounds complicated! Yet, I was implicitly discussing this recently with colleagues, in the context of microplastics uptake into our bodies. I can say that there is a significant knowledge gap between current health risk assessment strategies and the actual transport dynamics and endpoint accumulation of microplastics in humans. Enough challenges left in porous media research for many years to come! In other news, we’ve got Masa Prodanovic’s webinar, InterPore2023 of course (don’t forget to send in your abstract!) and the lecture from Prof. Adrien Bejun (do invite him over!) as well as challenges (and likely some solutions, too) shared in Norway (see report) and to be shared during the next Porous Media Tea Time Talk. And if you know someone up for a challenge, consider forwarding the job opportunities below! All the best, Matthijs de Winter

Special Issue in Advances in Geo-Energy ResearchA special issue of the journal Advances In Geo-Energy Research has been planned based on contributions to InterPore2023. The special issue is entitled “Micro-nano Scale Multiphase Flow in Porous Media”. The special issue will focus on mathematical, experimental and numerical investigation for micro-nano scale multiphase flow in porous media, with an emphasis on theoretical contributions which increase the basic understanding of flow and transport through porous media and their application to engineering and scientific problems. Guest editors of the special issue are Hadi Hajibeygi from Delft University of Technology as lead guest editor along with Guest Editors Reza Soltanian from University of Cincinnati, Steffen Berg from Shell Global Solutions International B.V, Wendong Wang from China University of Petroleum (East China) and Jianchao Cai from China University of Petroleum. More details, including submission deadlines and details, can be found here. Invited SpeakerProf. Gerard Vignoles Title: How the Chemical Vapor Infiltration Process can be Optimized for the Production of Advanced Composite and Porous Ceramics Gerard Louis Vignoles obtained his PhD at University of Bordeaux. He then started as assistant professor at Laboratory of ThermoStructural Composites (LCTS), where he continued his whole career, now as full Professor and Head of this joint Research Unit of CNRS, University of Bordeaux, CEA and the Safran group. His main research research topics are focused on image-based, multi-physics and multiscale physico-chemical modelling with principal applications in the development of CeramicMatrix Composites: processing, mechanical, thermal and environmental behaviour. Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) is a high-quality and versatile process enabling the preparation of reinforced porous and architecture ceramics as well as Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC), which are high-temperature materials for aerospace, energy management and industrial systems. This presentation will describe the process physico-chemistry and its modelling, which is multi-physics and multi-scale. The numerical tools range from… read more

Webinar with Maša Prodanović10 January 2023, 9 am CST (4 pm CET) Join us on 10 January 2023 for a hybrid webinar with Maša Prodanović, entitled Flow and transport coefficients in porous media: from direct simulation to automated prediction. Maša Prodanović is a Frank W. Jessen Professor in Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (PGE) at the University of Texas at Austin. She is an applied mathematician-turned-engineer and has expertise in direct simulation of flow and particulate transport in porous and fractured media, porous media characterization especially based on 2D and 3D images of rock microstructure, unconventional resources and data curation. Permeability, diffusion coefficients or electrical resistivity of porous media containing multiple fluids phases are important in hydrology, enhanced oil recovery, energy storage or micro-vascular networks. Direct simulation combined with images (e.g. X-ray or scanning electron microscopy) provides a way to compute them in a specific porous media case regardless of… read the full abstract
Energies 2023 Travel AwardDeadline: 31 January 2023
The deadline for applications for the 2023 Travel Award has been extended to 31 January 2023. This award will be given to two junior scientists, encouraging them to present their latest research at academic conferences, honoring their excellence and contribution in the field of energy and related research. The winners will be announced by 15 March 2023. We would be very grateful if you would share this message with other researchers in your circle and beyond. Please ensure that your application meets the specific requirements and criteria of this award. Details regarding the prizes, eligibility and requirements, required documents, and application procedure can be found on the Awards page of the Energies journal. If you have any questions, please contact the Awards Team at energies@mdpi.com.
Promote your PublicationInterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore In Journals Section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online).* The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
