The Rien van Genuchten Early Career Award is given to an early-career researcher whose focus is the general topic of “porous media research for a green world”. This may involve significant theoretical, experimental and/or modeling advances addressing major soil, hydrologic and/or environmental problems facing our planet.
The award will be given every year to a person with at most three years of experience after receiving his/her PhD (not including the year of receiving the PhD). The award consists of a certificate and a conference grant of €1,500 for participation in the next InterPore Conference.
The grant is preferentially intended for young researchers from countries with low- or middle-income economies as defined by the World Bank.
We strongly encourage nominations for those who have contributed outstanding theoretical, experimental and/or modelling advances on natural or industrial porous media from fundamental and/or applied aspects addressing major soil, hydrologic and/or environmental problems facing our Planet.
Nomination packages should include:
- a nomination letter (maximum length two pages) describing specific contributions of the nominee to porous media research during the last 10 years (not counting the current year). The nomination letter should end with a citation statement; an example: “this nominee has made outstanding contributions to the physics of transport in porous media in several fields, such as non-newtonian fluid flow, drying and imbibition, colloidal transport, mass transfer in wood, and the use of NMR for imaging,”
- up to three supporting letters (maximum length two pages),
- copies of relevant publications (in electronic format) published during or within three years after receiving the PhD degree.
- a two-page CV of nominee, and a full publication list.
Nomination packages should be submitted to nomination@interpore.org. Nominee and nominator must be members of InterPore.* Self-nominations are also accepted. InterPore membership is not required of those who write letters of support. The award prize should be used for participation in the InterPore conference where the award will be given.
*Nominees from Low- and Middle-Income countries LMI countries, as defined by the World Bank, are not subject to this requirement.
Nomination Deadline: November 15th
A word of gratitude:
This award has been made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Betty-May Pontedeiro to the InterPore Foundation and is created in honor of the eminent soil and groundwater scientist Marthinus (Rien) Th. van Genuchten. Rien van Genuchten is world renown for his enormous achievements in the area of fluids flow and solutes transport in partially-saturated porous media. He has made highly impactful contributions to the understanding and modeling of subsurface processes, in such widely varying fields as soil physics, hydrology, geology, the environmental sciences, and civil engineering.
