Postdoctoral position in Environmental Fluid Mechanics: Solubility trapping of CO2 in deep formations

Employer & location: Géosciences Rennes, Univ. Rennes 1, Campus de Beaulieu, Rennes (France).

Starting date: between Feb. 15th and March 1st, 2020.

Closing date of the call: Feb. 15th 2020.

Project description:

A position as Postdoctoral Associate is available in the team “Dynamics, Imaging and Modeling of Environmental Systems” (DIMENV) of Géosciences Rennes. The position is funded by the French ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). The project aims to improve our understanding of the convective dissolution of CO2 in deep saline aquifers and reservoirs, which leads to perennial trapping of CO2 at the bottom of such formations. The question will be addressed with a novel experimental setup allowing characterizing the convection and resulting CO2 flux at the pore scale in a three-dimensional (3D) porous medium. Experimental results will be compared to the results of a 3D Darcy scale numerical simulation. The experimental setup and code have been developed by a previous postdoctoral associate and are mostly ready for use. Phenomenological models will be developed to upscale the experimental results and obtain large scale predictions.

Requirements:

The successful applicant will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Fluid Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Hydrogeology. They should have a good knowledge of Fluid Mechanics and a solid experience of experimental work in the laboratory. A record of publications in leading scientific journals will be a significant asset. Being able to work in a team is also a prerequisite.

The successful applicant will have to have spent at least 12 of the last 36 months outside of France.

Conditions and environment:

  • Brutto salary will be around 29 000 € per year, allowing living comfortably in Rennes

  • French “social security” (health plan) and pension plan included

  • 18 months contract, possibly extendable

  • The work language will be English

  • Géosciences Rennes is one of the leading institutes for Geosciences and Environmental Sciences in France, with ~50 academic staff members and ~70 postdoctoral and doctoral research scientists

  • Rennes is the historical capital of French Brittany in Western France, with a metropolitan area of about 720 000 inhabitants. It was ranked in 2012 as the “city with the best quality of life in France” by French news magazine L’Express.

The application must include:

  • A cover letter explaining your motivation for the position

  • A Curriculum Vitae and list of publications

  • The contact details of two to four references: name, email address, relation to applicant
