A Beer Festival in Qingdao

Qingdao, China, the host city of InterPore2020, is famous for music, tourists, traditional food and, especially, BEER. Its beer-making tradition goes back more than 100 years. The annual Qingdao International Beer Festival, China’s largest celebration of lager, is currently in full swing through late August. Since the festival started in 1991, the crowds have steadily increased. Last year’s festival drew an estimated 6.2 million people.

Over 40 different international breweries are represented at the festival. In addition to the city’s own Tsingtao beer, participants can visit the various tents and indulge in beers from around the world – Budweiser, Carlsberg, Paulaner and Kirin, to name but a few. In addition to all that beer, there is plenty of food to be found. Attendees can have their fill of both traditional Chinese and Western food. Everything from chicken’s feet and grilled squid to bratwurst and sauerkraut is on the menu.

Inside the beer tents, the scene is raucous. People come to partake in the re nao atmosphere, a Mandarin term for “loud and chaotic”. The shouts of “Gan Bei” (bottoms up!) can be heard throughout as revelers enjoy the libations and lively entertainment of each tent. Outside on the festival grounds, fireworks, open-air concerts and competitions of all sorts can be found.

While, sadly, the festival will not coincide with InterPore2020, the Qingdao Beer Museum built by Tsingtao Brewery in 1903 can be visited year-round. It’s China’s first, and only, beer museum and combines historical treasures with modern design.

We look forward to toasting “Gan Bei!” with you in May!
