interpore news

Dear InterPore colleagues,

My eldest son wondered whether my job would be very boring, sitting behind a computer screen all day. Well, I replied, today I only had meetings, from 09.00 to 17.30 back-to-back, so, I didn’t sit behind a computer screen (except for Teams from hybrid meetings, of course). Neither of us could decide whether I had a better day than normal…

Well, I finished the day with the ever-rewarding compiling of the Newsletter. Yes, back to the desk, but not for nothing. From a new InterPore team member (welcome!), to Chapter News, from many many job opportunities to a call from the ISC, from courses to the special issue of the InterPore Journal.

And if you fancy any of this, please let us know through our social channels!

All the best,

Matthijs de Winter
Editor-in-Chief

While the deadline for submitting an abstract for in-person oral presentations has passed, abstract submission for poster and online presentations remains open.

Abstracts for poster and online presentations can still be submitted at the InterPore2024 website.

SUBMIT

Dear fellow InterPore community member,

Happy New Year!

The abstract submission for talks at InterPore2024 has now been wrapped up, the conference is fast approaching, and our fundraising campaign for conference grants is also entering its final stretch.

Help us get closer to our goal of funding at least six travel grants (3000 € in total).

So far, the generous donations of a handful of us (550 €) allows the funding of one single grant, but we know this community can do significantly more.

Before getting back to your busy beginning of 2024, consider helping your fellow scientists from countries with economic difficulties. It takes only two minutes!

Even a small donation from every member of InterPore would allow us to exceed our goal.

DONATE

Diversity, even more so in a period of international turmoil, is an invaluable asset. Help us make InterPore2024 an incredible opportunity for everyone.

Best regards,
InterPore Foundation board

Invited speaker

In anticipation of InterPore2024, we’re introducing the invited speakers in today’s and forthcoming Newsletters and Bulletins. This week: Ivan Lunati

Ivan Lunati
Empa, Switzerland

Title: Inertia, non-equilibrium, and momentum conservation in porous media

Bio: Ivan Lunati is a physicist with interests that span theory, scientific computing, and experiments. In 2020, he joined Empa, where he is currently the Head of the Laboratory for Computational Engineering. His current research is intrinsically interdisciplinary and embraces, in addition to porous media, atomistic simulations, artificial intelligence, electro-optical diagnostic, network science, epidemiology, and virus transport.

Abstract: Theoretical and computational models of flow through porous media typically ignore inertial effects and use Darcy’s law (and extensions thereof) to approximate momentum balance. This contrasts with experimental observations of rapid fluid movement in the pore space, such as Haines jumps. We review the role of local inertial effects in shaping the morphology of invading fluid fronts, paying particular attention to… read more

New Exhibitor

The InterPore2024 team is excited to have Math2Market join us again as an exhibitor at the upcoming conference! Whether you’ll be joining us in Qingdao or remotely from home, be sure to visit their booth to learn about their products and services.

And now… Qingdao!

InterPore2024 will be in Qingdao. Described as a city of “red tiles, green trees, blue sky, and blue sea.” Qingdao has a lot of things to offer with respect to science, science history and porous media. This week: PLA Navy Museum

The PLA Navy Museum is a military museum reflecting the development of the Chinese Navy. The collection of the PLA Navy Museum mainly consists of important cultural relics and historical materials of the Navy in various historical periods, including the Soviet Navy officer’s sword, the first submarine-to-surface missile developed by China, the first nuclear submarine “Long March 1” decommissioned in China, etc.

Repository for Open Calls for Research Projects

InterPore wants to set up a repository for open calls for national and international research projects related to the understanding, description, and modeling of natural and industrial porous media systems.

Please send information on such open calls including details on main research topics, target countries, budget, and duration to Costanza Aricò.

The information received will be published on the InterPore website. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming editions of the newsletter.

Humboldt Postdoc Fellowship in Magdeburg

The scouting program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers the opportunity of postdoctoral fellowships to excellent candidates in the lab of a nominating scout without undergoing the usually time-consuming application procedure. Prof. Evangelos Tsotsas is such a “scout” and looking for an adequate candidate for a research stay of up to two years with his group in Magdeburg, Germany. The group works on chemical engineering applications of porous media and would like to preferentially support in the frame of this activity young female scientists from any country or young scientists from developing countries. However, qualified and motivated candidates of any background should not hesitate to contact us. For more details, please look at the website, or email Evangelos Tsotsas.
