Dear InterPore colleagues, I hear a lot of people wrapping up before the summer break (sorry, “southern hemospherers”), but nothing like that for InterPore! How about launching our own scientific journal! See below. There are workshops and events coming up. Scientific literature to catch up on, and we look back and forth at InterPore2023 and InterPore2024. I also like to point to Brian Wood’s obituary of the late prof. Steve Whitaker. It is truly inspirational to read. In line with the obituary, I can recommend the Time Capsule recording as well. All the best, Matthijs de Winter
In Memoriam: Stephen Whitaker
Coming Soon – The InterPore Journal There is of course still plenty of information to add to this website, but you can already check out the Board of Editors as well as the Committee on Publication Ethics Board and more. We plan to start receiving submissions in July! In the meantime, get those papers ready! We would love to receive your contributions linked to a porous media application. Submitted research may include, but is not limited to, physical and numerical modelling, imaging techniques and analysis, theory development, big data analysis, characterization, and/or material design. Laura Lenz
Last chance: InterPore Strategic Planning SurveyOur Strategic Planning Survey will close this weekend. If you have not already, please complete this short survey to assist us in strategic planning. The survey should take only a few minutes, and the responses are anonymous. You may also access the survey via the above QR code.
Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2023 Prof. Bejan will soon travel to the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where he will deliver his lecture at the 15th International Green Energy Conference, 12 July. Other scheduled presentations include the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials, Brazil, in July (online); the Politecnico de Torino, Italy, in September (in person); and the Journées d’Etude des Milieux Poreux (JEMP2023), France, in October (in person). We would like to thank Prof. Bejan for his dedication and efforts to honour all the applications sent to us! Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lecturer 2024 Please visit our website for further information on how to apply.
InterPore2023 Survey Results InterPore2023 is already behind us! Thank you again to everyone who participated and a special thanks to the feedback shared via our post-conference survey. Your input is crucial and allows us to continue to improve upon and deliver what is most important to our participants. Overall, InterPore2023 participants were very satisfied, with 92% rating the quality of the scientific program good or very good. Read the full recap here.
After the success of InterPore2023 in Edinburgh, we are looking forward to organizing InterPore2024! The focus theme of InterPore2024 will be “porous media and biology.” This includes occurrence and applications of biology in living organs, plants, and in medicine, as well as in soil, oil and gas reservoirs. It will include theories and (bio)physics, experiments, imaging, mathematics, and modelling. The conference will take place at the luxury five-star Shangri-La Hotel located in Qingdao, a very cosmopolitan port city at the Yellow Sea. It offers conference center and residence at one location. Known for Tsingtao Beer and international festivals, Qingdao promotes friendship, economic & cultural exchanges between China and others all over the world. Come and enjoy one of China’s most liveable cities.

Israel National Chapter Meeting – registration closes next week! 29 June 2023, Haifa, Israel Please see here for more details. France National Chapter Meeting – abstract submission closes June 30!17-19 October 2023, Rueil-Malmaison, France Submit your abstracts by 30 June 2023 here.
Next week: IMA1119-22 June 2023, Bordeaux, France For more information, please visit their website.
Next week: MetFoam5-7 July 2023, Dresden, Germany Join the 12th International Conference on Porous Metals and Metallic Foams MetFoam in Dresden. The MetFoam conference series is the largest cross-disciplinary, international technical meeting focused exclusively on the production methods, properties, and applications of functional and lightweight porous/cellular metallic materials. After the last editions in China and the USA, MetFoam is now back in Europe. With your registration you can also participate in the first edition of the International Conference on Emerging Applications of PM & AM Materials and Technologies EMATec. This new conference focuses on the latest material and technology developments for applications in the future. The aim is to create a regular forum where interdisciplinary exchange between users, producers and development is promoted and a nucleus for innovative powder metallurgical solutions of the future is created. You can find the preliminary program of the joint conferences MetFoam and EMATec here.

Elasticity of Confined Simple Fluids from an Extended Peng-Robinson Equation of StateSantiago A. Flores Roman, Gabriel D. Barbosa, and Gennady Y. Go Thermodynamic properties of fluids in nanopores are altered by confinement, and equations of state (EOS) for bulk fluids are unable to predict them. We utilized a recent EOS based on the Peng-Robinson EOS, which takes into account the effects of confinement, to derive an analytical expression for the bulk modulus of the fluid. We calculated the modulus of liquid argon confined in spherical nanopores of various sizes, and verified our predictions with the Monte Carlo molecular simulations. Our result is a step toward developing an equation of state for confined fluids, which can be used for predictions of elasticity. Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2023, 62, 22, 8972–8980 Pore-scale study of calcite dissolution during CO2-saturated brine injection for sequestration in carbonate aquifersQiuheng Xie, Wendong Wang, Yuliang Su, Han Wang, Zhouyuan Zhang, Wubin Yan Calcite reacts with CO2-saturated brine to form a divalent ion, which would have a great impact on mineral trapping. To further investigate the mechanism of calcite dissolution, the pore-scale reactive dynamics model based on lattice Boltzmann method was established. The results indicate that the effect of injection rate on dissolution reaction may decrease when ambient temperature is higher. Furthermore, the change in normalized permeability of porous media and dissolved calcite node under different temperature and injection rate is also elaborated. The outcomes in this contribution provide a theoretical guideline to potential estimation of CO2 sequestration and optimization of aimed sites. Gas Science and Engineering Volume 114, June 2023, 204978 InterPore Members can promote their publications to the community via the InterPore InJournals Section of the Newsletter. If you wish to do so, please submit your publication highlight to newsletter@InterPore.org. Clearly indicate which of the authors is an InterPore member (or the institute with an Institutional Membership). Note that we will not review the entries nor does InterPore endorse the published work. Furthermore, we publish on a “submitted first, published first” basis. The highlighted publication should be no older than 6 months (available online). The highlight should be short (max 100 words) and contain an illustration. Please note that we offer this opportunity exclusively to InterPore members. If you would like to become a member, please have a look here.
