10 March 2016 – German Chapter Kick-off Meeting
Researchers from around Germany gathered in Erlangen to establish the German Chapter of the InterPore Society. The meeting was organised and hosted by Prof. Peter Knabner and took place on the southern Campus of Erlangen University. Besides the regular attendees, the meeting was backed by numerous letters of support from researchers that could not be present personally.
After a welcome address by Peter Knabner and Oleg Iliev, who led the meeting, Rainer Helmig gave an overview of the history and intentions of the InterPore society and outlined challenges and perspectives for its future development. As possible future foci of the German Chapter, Prof. Helmig suggested among others the connection of modelling/simulation/optimisation and big data as well as the initiation of common EU activities. The primary purpose of InterPore will also be central to the German Chapter: To foster the interdisciplinary exchange between experts from academia and industry alike by building bridges and bridging gaps.
The plenum then officially founded the German Chapter without objections. The nominated scientists for the Steering Committee are listed below.
The meeting then turned to presentations and discussions on current topics in porous media research. Rainer Helmig presented work on porous media in biomedical research, Jan Vanderborght showed the diversity of problems encountered in agriculture. Frank Wuttke spoke about sensible heat storage and links between the fields of energy and geotechnics. Thomas Nagel presented research on thermochemical heat storage for industrial applications and geotechnics.
The UFZ in Leipzig will host the first meeting of the German Chapter in December 2016.
